Idea: How about starting an employment network area on DU?
One of the many, many things I love about DU is the wide variety of members, not just in terms of age, race, gender, religion, and geographic region or country, but also in terms of the different types of employment. Almost every type of occupation is represented, as well as many different types of employers, small business owners, consultants, etc.

There are also plenty of people here who are diligently searching for employment, or exploring the possibilities of self-employment, buying or starting a business, going free-lance, etc.

Another thing I love about DU is the willingness and eagerness of members to help each other, even if it's just in the form of encouragement. So maybe we could start a new topic here dealing with employment issues and networking? Some of the areas that could be covered might be the following:

1. The basic issue, which is people seeking employment. Members could post their background and qualifications and what kind of job they're seeking. They could also ask for help with resumes and cover letters, advice on interviews, job-seeking itself, etc.

2. Career counseling and advice. Younger members may not know what kind of career they should pursue and what would be best for them, older members may be interested in a career change and how best to go about it.

3. The unemployed. I've been there, and I know all too well the incredible frustration and increasing sense of desperation with each rejection and no money or coming close to running out of money. It really helps people in that situation to have the support and share their concerns and frustrations with others who are in the same boat and who understand exactly what they're dealing with.

4. New trends in employment. An area we could call "Employer Watch", where we could keep track of the employment practices and policies of major businesses and corporations, who's hiring, who's downsizing, how they hire and fire, how they treat employees, etc. It could also include a section on the "hottest" careers, those most in demand.

These are just some ideas I'm kicking around, let me know what you think. I'm not sure how we'd go about implementing it, but I think it would really be a great help to a lot of members.

3. That would be cool
It seems from lounge posts that many members would mind this to be useful.

4. You could start it as
a simple forum named Jobs/Employment and see how it pans out from there. Great idea.
