Life sucks!
I cracked a tooth am currently drugged up on painkillers that leave me in a constant 'so dizzy you are about to puke' state. All I have to look forward to this next week is dental surgery and a gigantic bill.

Fuck!

1. I'm so sorry to hear that!
Can you get some temperary dental filling stuff to help?

I've had five extractions, a root canal, a bridge, and a half dozen crowns. I've been able to pay them all off, and I found that the surgery itself really wasn't so bad (the worst part about the root canal was having to listen to country music over the sound system in the doctor's office!) Just remember to breathe deeply and evenly, and keep focused on your breath during the surgery. It helps to visualize that everything will go well the day before, too. If this sounds loopy, remember that it won't cost anything or make anything hurt more if you try it!

Good luck!

3. I have to be knocked out
Edited on Sun Aug-17-03 03:01 PM by Blue_Chill
I had a root canal in which the guy thought the nerve was dead when it wasn't and drilled into a live nerve. When I stopped seeing red the Dentist had a busted lip and I was in the parking lot.

Because of this drugs during a visit won't take effect because of the stress my body goes thru. Thus I'm either asleep or my mouth is shut and no one is allowed near me.

8. Sounds like you could use some Oil of Clove-
The same stuff Laurence Olivier offered Dustin Hoffman after drilling the hole in his tooth in "Marathon Man". It does work wonders for oral pain.

BTW- when I was a kid, we had a family dentist who didn't believe in giving Novacaine to children, and would strap your arms to the chair.
and today, I can go to the dentist just fine- I had an extraction done two weeks ago on a problem tooth that had been through a root canal and two apicoectomies.

in fact, right now I'm missing two teeth- both one tooth in from the back tooth- one on the upper right, the other on the lower left.
The spaces aren't visible when I smile or open my mouth, so I'm in no hurry to have them 'bridged'. It makes for easier brushing and less flossing. I have insurance to cover it, but there's a yearly limit, and mine has been reached already.

Where's your cracked tooth?

5. Ouch
I hope that you feel better after surgery besides the bill of course. I felt rather ill when I took viacaden after having my wisdom teeth out and decided that the pain was better than the sick feeling. I was told later that it helped if you ate something. You might want to call the dental office too to see if they have any advice or if they can prescribe you something different.

6. Gues it's true what they say ...
...once you let gum disease get a grip in your mouth the good times are gone.

Thanks, I'm going to start flossing more 8-D.

7. I'm there too and it DOES suck
I'm going to be writing a check for $1,500 on Tuesday to my dentist. I have probably spent at least $8,000 over the past 5 years for everything imaginable - root canals, caps, bridges, surgery, bonding. It totally runs in my family. I guess my mother didn't take calcium when she was preg. with me and my siblings. As far as the pain killers go, take the vicodan on a full stomach and you should be fine. Good luck!

9. More Pain-killer info-
If you have a bad reaction to tylenol like I do, you can ask the dentist to prescribe Vicoprofen instead.
Vicodin is hydrocodone and acetomeniphen(tylenol), whereas vicoprofen is hydrocodone and ibuprofen(advil).
