5. No XP...
98 does just about everything I need for now, and before I go XP, I'm going Mac amd Linux.

Playing with Linux on another, even older, box, but haven't had the time to get it right for what I need.

When I get the money, I go Mac for real work. But I'll miss WordPerfect.

4. Oh, I know why it does this...
when the Compaq fried I just pulled the boot drive out and stuck it in an old HP P200 lying around till I get the new one. Took a few days to get everything running. Slow, but running. Took a lot less time than reinstalling software. I don't know where my WordPerfect key went, and network card drivers, printer drivers, DSL setup.... GAAACK! It could take a month even if I could find all that stuff.

The ancient HP bios doesn't like hard drives over 8GB, but Windoze handles that, sorta. It also won't properly read the 128MB memory dimms. Only reads up to 64 megs in each slot. HP has no bios upgrades-- just buy one of their new machines.

The Compaq used to crash, too, with the incredibly crappy patching they did on their version of Win98, and it doesn't help that neither of these machines has proper cooling, so the temperature thingie on the processor craps out a lot. I have a fan to stick on the heat sink of the HP, even though youlda think a P200 wouldn't need it.

But, then, that HP wasn't made for the stuff I've got running now.

7. Not from HP...
but I don't care, since the new box should be delivered Monday, and I'm picking up a retired server in a few days.

Should have enough power there to get the HP back to just running printers and sending faxes.

3. new virus...
Edited on Sun May-02-04 12:27 AM by GoBucksBeatBush
it sounds like you MAY have the newest gift to the world's virus population, the "sasser worm." i'll post the info from microsoft about that, in the name of trying to alleviate some frustration...(i don't think billy gates and the folks in redmond will mind too much...sounds like this will hit the business community hard on monday morning...)

Products Affected by This Worm
Windows 2000 Service Pack 2, Windows 2000 Service Pack 3, and Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 1
Windows XP 64-bit Edition Service Pack 1

Products Not Affected by This Worm
Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a
Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003
Windows Server 2003
Windows Server 2003 64-Bit Edition

How to Tell If Your Computer Is Infected
If your computer is infected with W32.Sasser.worm, you may see an error message with text that refers to LSASS.exe (see below for examples). Although some customers whose computers have been infected may not notice the presence of the worm at all, others whose computers are not infected may experience problems because the worm is attempting to attack their computer. Typical symptoms may include systems rebooting every few minutes without user input.

Mitigation Steps for Affected Computers
If your computer is infected with the W32.Sasser.worm, do the following:

1. Enable the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall or a third-party firewall.
2. Disconnect the computer from the Internet.
3. Restart the computer.
4. If you have problems rebooting, reboot in safe mode.
5. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL.
6. In the Windows Security window, click Task Manager.
7. Click the Processes tab.
8. Press and hold CTRL, and then select C:\WINDOWS\avserve.exe and
c:\WINDOWS\system32\*_up.exe.
9. Click End Process.
10. Click Start.
11. Click Search, and then search for and delete both of the following files:
C:\WINDOWS\avserve.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\*_up.exe
12. Click Start again, click Run, and then type:
regedit
13. Click OK.
14. In Registry Editor, locate and delete the following registry
key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run "avserve.exe" = C:\WINDOWS\avserve.exe

15. Connect the computer to the Internet.
16. Go to the Windows Update site, and then click Scan for Updates.
17. Windows will scan for critical updates.
18. Download and install any recommended critical updates.

Preventive Steps for Home Users
Customers can protect against this worm by immediately downloading and installing Microsoft Security Update MS04-011.

If your computer is running Windows XP and you have enabled the Windows XP Firewall, you are protected from attacks by this worm. Most third-party firewalls will also block this attack.

If you have not enabled the Windows XP Firewall or set up a third-party firewall, you can make your computer more resistant to this type of attack by taking the following recommended basic precautions when you connect to the Internet:

Take 3 Steps to Help Ensure Your PC Is Protected

8. Don't think so...
my AV's been good about catching this crap, and the firewall catches a lot of it, too.

I'm getting even less of it now since Earthlink added virus protection to its mail servers.

But, I do the virus check thingie every day anyway.

10. I haven't got a blue screen in years...
Ever since XP. It never crashes on me. I even rebooted after taking in the "I love you" virus and it was relatively stable.

XP is a really good OS, I'd reccomend looking into it.

12. I might have to, eventually...
WordPerfect, PCAnywhere, and one or two other things I'm pretty well locked into for the foreseeable future. With a Mac or Linux, I don't think emulators will work, so I'm stuck with at least one Windoze box. VNC could replace PCAnywhere, and Open Office does most of what WordPerfect does, but it seems dumping Windoze completely is not in the immediate future.

Eventually, of course, nothing will work on 98 any more.

13. After reading everything I feel qualified to offer some advice
.
.
.

I'm running Windows 98SE on an old DellGxi P1 upgraded to a 233MMX processor with 128M Ram (4x32)

Bios's are upgraded by the manufacturer of the Bios, like Phoenix, American Megatrends, etc. not the maker of the unit, like Dell, Compaq, Digital, whatever.

First of all, DEFINITELY upgrade your AV & Firewall

This is what I use, it's foolproof:

.

.

.

I notice you're going to get a new unit soon,

so just for nostalgia's sake

your new wallpaper!
.

.

.

.

That's all my qualifications allow me to contribute!

:hi:

Enjoy your new 'puter

14. BIOS upgrades -- depends
your best bet is to do a search on the model of your MB. Gateway, for example has proprietary crap (or at least used to) and you had to use their upgrades and not that of the bios creator.
