I have a confession to make...
I was a Debutante. In my senior year in high school, I "came out". Pretty funny now, but that is what they called it then. Young women were "introduced to society" via a big gala dance. In my case, being Catholic, I "came out" at the Catholic Debutante Ball. When you do this, you dress in a white gown and your are "presented" by your father to someone, usually a socially prominent person...in my case the Cardinal of Boston.

The whole purpose of this was to introduce young women to elligible young men. Lots of guys were invited to this little shindig...most of them got drunk on their asses.

Some girls (or their parents) got really carried away with this stuff and "came out" in NYC and Vienna....

God! I'm mortified thinking about this!!!

This was 40 years ago...I've changed...I became an anti-war activist during Vietnam...I raised a good kid...I think I've atoned...but really, what a bizzare practice back then...sorry! :eyes:

7. Velma, now I'm really rediculous!
There were pics in the Boston Globe...I wore a white gown with daisies on it...WITH DAISIES!!! God! And I wore white gloves... yes I did...but not a hat...worse, a hair piece! OHHHH! God, this is hard. The only protest made by me was that under my white daisy gown I wore my tennis sneakers. I did that because I was convinced I was going to fall on my ass in front of all of those people. Painful, painful, painful!

9. Nothing wrong with daisies.
Daisies are a good hippie kind of flower. :)

Do you feel better now that you've confessed? Confession is a big step to recovery ya know. ;)

My husband went to HS in Boston 40+ years ago. He knew some girls who went through this, too. He just said to me "She could be an old girlfriend." Yikes! :D

in many big cities. We have at least two here in Kansas City. No, three.

14. The Hispanic community still does these for girls...
...when they turn 15. Usually it's a family thing, though, and not an entire community at once. The best way I have heard to describe these is "like a wedding, except no one gets married". Quincianera is the term.
