OK, it's not a big, big deal, but it gets on my nerves.
It seems to be the custom around my company to hold doors open for people. That's fine. Sometimes the effort of using my badge to unlock the door and actually opening it myself might be overwhelming, were there not someone there to hold it open for me.

What I don't understand is holding the door open for someone who is at the other end of a long, long hallway and walking not very quickly in the direction of the door. The walker feels pressure to move more quickly than s/he'd intended so the holder won't have to stand there forever holding the door. Neither party is happy or comfortable in the end. The holder thinks s/he is being courteous, when in fact the opposite is true--the holder has made everyone less comfortable, not more so!

I speak as a walker. I hate having to hurry up so someone else can think s/he's doing me a favor. I have waved to indicate the holder should not wait for me to get there, only to have my wishes ignored.

What can be done?!

1. Maybe they like you
You know... 'like' like. Holding the door while they're a good bit away and you're *telling them* to just go is just... well it's just weird. They must have a crush on you. :)

2. I agree PB
When I see that up ahead and I don't wish to rush, I stop pull out the cell and pretend to get a call.

3. That would be irritating. Maybe you could just wave them on or say...
"...Go ahead, I've got it."

6. Oh, just walk slower
And if the door-holder lets go of the door, make sure to call him something vulgar next time you see him. You'll change people's attitudes in a hurry. :D

7. I like your suggestions best!
But seriously, I have waved at people to indicate they shouldn't wait for me, but they insist.

11. As soon as you see them holding the door for you...
... stop dead in your tracks and just stand there staring at them. Whoever blinks first loses.

OR

Roll a hand grenade down the hall in their direction. It will probably encourage them to get moving and close the door behind them.

OR

As you come along side of them, fart really loud. Eventually everyone will be afraid to wait at the end of the hall for you.

OR

Pull the emergency fire hose off the wall and point it at them. If they don't take the hint, turn the valve to full on.

OR

Just as you get to within four or five paces of the door, abruptly turn around and walk back the way you came.

OR

Carry a very large bundle of loose papers in your arms, and halfway down the hall, "accidently" spill them all over the floor. Make a big show of picking each one up carefully and placing it back in proper order. Make sure to give the impression that you may take hours to finish this chore.
