My Norton is about to expire
I have Norton Systemworks 2002, and my subscription to the update service is about to expire. My three options:

  • Renew

  • Get the latest version of Norton Systemworks

  • Get another software package that does the same thing.

Your suggestions?

1. I use Trend Micro's free online scan. Seems to work fine.

2. Don't get the latest SystemWorks (2004)...
...until you read the reviews and user comments about it sucking up a greater level of system resources with no major improvements.

I have SystemWorks 2003, it has worked fine, and I paid for a 1 year update subscription when mine ran out.

Here's the CNET review of 2004:

12. Systemworks 2004 ...
Edited on Mon May-03-04 09:48 PM by BattyDem
is terrible! My computer kept freezing and my internet connection slowed to a crawl before dying completely. What a waste of money. :(

Two friends of mine had similar problems - the one person's computer was so bad after installing NSW 2004 that she couldn't run MS Office and she couldn't connect to the internet - and those are the only two reasons she even has a computer!

6. As a Computer Tech and MCSE I'll tell you....
...the scientific way to do it.

Take that crap off your computer and get AVG anti-virus. :)
It's free...updates are free...and it works great plus takes up a small space on your drive.

9. I second that!
AVG is as good as anything out there. All others are just a scam.

8. I have been using Norton Anti Virus 2001 for three years now.
It was bundled with Norton System Works 2001 but I only use NAV. The license is good for 366 days. When it is a few days away from expiring I uninstall it and clean out the Registry (not recommended for everyone). Then I reinstall it and that makes it good for another 366 days. It works with live update and gets all the latest A/V data files. Works like a champ!

11. Black Ice??? Duuuuude.....NO!
Go to Steve Gibson's Web Site...one of the top authorities on computer safety. Black Ice has been considered one of the most unsafe firewalls for a while now.

You can get a free version of ZoneAlarm, which is held in pretty high regard. They had a major user revolt when they issued version 3...very buggy and erratic...but that's all been resolved with version 4.

http://www.grc.com/lt/scoreboard.htm

Black Ice is rated as "unsafe" due to the fact that it "doesn't block unknown Trojans, Viruses, or Spyware."

Go to his main page and click on "Shields Up" and you can test the safety of your current configuration:

http://www.grc.com/default.htm

Also, at this URL, you'll find additional info on the problems with Black Ice:

http://www.grc.com/lt/leaktest.htm

You'll find the pros and cons for the most popular firewalls at the URL above.

Adaware is great. Consider Spybot Search and Destroy as well...also free...and I prefer to use the two together.
