Need advice: my aunt found out she has cerosis (sp) of the liver due to
arthritis medicine-she doesn't drink- and is afraid it will become cancer. Is there anyone out there who can speak to the possibility of this? My mom is just crushed about her sister.

Ginia was a quiet Roosevelt dem who voted blue state even though her husband's family were reds. She hates bush more than I do. She's my hero.

Help would be appreciated.

It's Cirrhosis. As far as I know, it's not tied to cancer. It's not good, but from what I recall, the liver can function even with a fair amount of damage. Generally, stopping the cause of the damage can limit the damage.

edit: another link with good info: http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/cirrhosis/index.htm

2. Your best bet
is to seek the insight of a few qualified medical practioners, rather than to get information from this forum. No matter how well intentioned people on here are, you still need to speak with the "experts" for serious information. Diseases such as you aunt's can be due to a wide and varied number of causes, from environmental to genetic predisposition, and can include factors such as diets and medications. Hence, a person in CA may have experience very different than someone in NY; and perhaps neither apply to your aunt. I hope that you can either advocate (or help find someone who can) for the best medical treatment for your aunt, including getting the specific medical information your family needs. Good luck.

4. Don't forget to look into nutritional supplements.
1. Milk thistle which promotes healthy liver function
2. Alpha lipoic acid which is an antioxidant and it assures the proper functioning of two key enzymes that convert food into energy.
3. Primrose oil to prevent an imbalance of fatty acids, found in cirrhosis of the liver

There are other supplements of course. But consult a physician because you don't want to have a dangerous reaction if your aunt is taking pharmaceuticals. Supplements are powerful and can't necessarily mix with prescriptions.

I hope your aunt heals and improves. Take care of YOURSELF.
