Do you prefer a Gas or Electric stove?
I like the electric stoves that have the solid top. I really want one of those! Looks very easy to clean.

1. Gas
If only to say, "Now I'm cookin' with gas!"

In reality, gas gets hotter, quicker, IMHO.

2. I've worked with those radiating cooktops
...the house where I periodically dogsit has one. They're OK, but there are a couple of problems I have with them. They're slow to cool down, much slower than gas, so a simmer often has to be moved to a new burner if you want it quickly.

Also, your pans have to be dead-on flat to get even heat -- and they have to match the size of the burners exactly, no matter how nice they are, or you get hot spots that are really weird to work with.

They do look nice, I'll admit, and there's a special cleaning product for them that does make 'em shine up nice -- but the touch-buttons take some getting used to, especially if you become an oil-covered monster when you cook (like me) and yer fingers slip around.

Gimme a good stainless gas cooktop. :)

3. Gas, for sure.
You get a change in temperature much more quickly, which means less burned/overcooked things, in my experience. Plus, you can beat the heat-up time!

4. HATE electric stoves
With gas, you can control the temperature more easily.

10. Ditto
Takes forever to heat up and then there's the wasted heat when you turn the damn thing off.

5. I prefer gas stove tops and do not care as much about the oven
I can adjust for the temp diff on the oven.

However, with the gas stove top I am cooking with fire and that makes a difference. There are things when I cook that I can do with fire that I cannot do with an electric stove.

Maybe its just me but unless I am making a stew or soup I prefer to cook with fire.

7. I used to have gas and now have an electric stove with the solid top
Edited on Tue May-04-04 08:33 AM by ze_dscherman
Have it since some years, and still hate it. It's easier to clean, that is for true, but:

- getting it hot takes ages
- regulating the heat takes ages as well

If you like to use a wok or a pan for quick frying and then simmering, better stick to gas.

BTW, professional cooks work with gas, too.

8. Gas
Gas is the best - instant on, instant off.
There are electric stoves that come close to that, but only with an absurd price tag and miserable energy efficiency.

The cleaning part is overrated as well: you see every stain on a glass stove top, resulting in more , not less cleaning.
There are gas stoves with glass top, but can't see a single advantage .

9. Restaurants and chefs always use gas stoves
there's a good reason for that.
As a former professional cook, I go with gas. Electric is much harder to control.

11. Important thing to consider if you wanna switch to electric.......
You might need to upgrade your electrical service.

I've owned both gas and electric. I prefer gas but find electric not too difficult to work with if you get used to your stovetop/oven.

We remodelled our kitchen two years ago and we really wanted one of those solid top electric stoves. Then I found out that in order or have one installed, we would need to upgrade our electrical service and that was gonna cost us about $1500.

We opted for a new gas stove.

Easier cleanup (with a ceramic top) and you don't have to worry about the gas.

On edit... I'll qualify the post by saying that I'm not the cook of the family... my partner would prefer gas. :)

16. I've had both over the years and each has it's advantages
Overall, electric is safer, but gas cooks better.
