I need some help with a presentation for my Middle School students .......
tomorrow. I'm going to be talking about the differences between English and American English and, for a quiz, I need a list of less-obvious examples of where we Brits use a different word from our US cousins for something.

I'm trying to avoid the obvious - lift/elevator, street/sidewalk, nappy/diaper etc. All good suggestions eagerly received!

2. One I've noticed is that ...
Brits tend to say "If she'd not done that" whereas Americans tend to say "If she hadn't done that"... a matter of which words you shorten.

How about trunk/boot for the back of a car?

5. cigarette/fag
sausage/banger

trunk/boot

(and it seems you Brits use a different word for hood, as well, but I can't remember)

truck/lory

sorcerer's stone/philosopher's stone

Your use of the word "Yankee" or "Yank" is different than our use of it

11. Other Car Words
In America, the metal part of a car body in front of the passenger compartment is called the "hood" - in England, it's the "bonnet"

The glass part we call a "windshield" is called a "windscreen" in England.

The folding part of a convertible is called a "top" here in America - in England, it a "hood".

And a four-door car we cal a "sedan" is called a "saloon" in England.

Also they spell "tire" T-Y-R-E, and spell "fuse" F-U-Z-E.

One of my favorites.
The front fender on the passenger's side.
And here's a nice sequence:

But "Boot's"=chemist's=drug store
Hooter=horn, NOT a bar & grill staffed by well endowed young women.
Anorak=parka
Wellies/gumboots=knee-high rubber boots. I call 'em "carwash boots".

I could go on all day.
Our closest friends are an English couple...well, actually he's a Kenyan, but that's a whole nuther story.
