Poll question: Some of the "foods" I was raised on as a child...
Some of these are still comfort food to me. Some are so disgusting, I haven't eaten them in years.

Which sound good to you about now?

2. Two heart attack specials

Fried Baloney sandwich (on plain bread with mustard).

Fat Bread - bread dipped in the fat drippings from a
broiled steak.

Haven't had either in twenty five years (for good reason).

8. No

make four cuts at the cardinal points around the circle, about a
1/8th of the diameter of the baloney. Frys up even and looks like
a German Iron cross when finished. Fry on both side over high heat
in a ungreased skillet and put two or three slices in your sandwich.

Heaven.

Elvis would have approved.

But not a healthy diet.

9. And cans of chili with hotdogs...

I tried many different canned chili con carne now, and it's all
universally bad. Don't know if that means my tastes have matured
or canned chili has declined. Or both. Sigh.

10. It's both. Hormel Chili is especially bad.
I was happy to move back to the west coast where they have Stagg brand Chili. Significantly better, and gives a choice of beef, chicken, turkey, or vegetarian chili. I like the turkey. If you chop up and add a little onion & green pepper/jalapeno, it adds a lot.

Nothing beats the chili they use on the chili dogs at weinerschnitzel. My High Schoool girlfriend who worked there told me they break up the old bugers that have dried out on the grill to put in the chili. Even knowing that, I still love it.

She also worked at Arby's. I was so shocked to ffind that Arby's roast beef wasn't actually sliced off a cut of beef, but off of a block of pulverized beef parts held together with whatever binder, roasted and sliced. I also still like Arby's roast beef, though.

13. Creamed chipped beef on toast...
I remember eating that at F.W. Woolworth's back when I was a kid. Every time I think of chipped beef on toast, I think about my fine dining experiences there...

14. Canned Tamales!!!! Tools of the DEVIL!!!
One of the nice things about living in Texas is the ability to get REAL tamales. I can't go back to canned (which my mom made, too).

Our comfort foods were macaroni and cheese, hamburger with mashed potatoes, and "American chop suey."

That was great and skip the spoon; I ate it with my fingers. Unfortunately, they don't seem to make it anymore.

17. Grilled Cheese Sandwiches and Potato Soup and also Burgoo
The Potato soup was basically Milk Soup with Onions and Potatoes. Grilled Cheese was White Bread (from the day-old store) and whatever "cheese product" was on sale. Now, I think I would like Clam Chowder and a Grilled Cheese Sandwich.

We also had what we called "Soup", just Soup, which I later discovered had an actual name, Burgoo. This stuff is whatever meat you have around with onions, tomatoes, corn, potatoes and lima beans. You can throw whatever else you want into it, but the meat, lima beans, corn and onions seemed to be the crucial ingredients.

Graham Crackers with half and half poured over them until they were mush. This is a terribly fattening treat.

Always had Margarine, never butter. It took my parents' divorce and a new wife for my Dad to finally get some butter in the house.
