Ceiling Panel Falls at Boston City Office
<snip>
BOSTON (AP) - An 80-pound ceiling panel fell 30 feet and crashed on a city councilor's desk, causing no injuries but prompting officials to close the City Council chamber.

No one was in the chamber when the mahogany panel fell, apparently sometime over the weekend.

Workers discovered the 12-foot-square panels above the council floor are precariously held up only by small screws, said Michael Galvin, chief of basic city services. They also found traces of asbestos in the chamber.

Galvin said the chamber would remain closed up to three weeks while the panels are replaced with lighter material and the asbestos removed.

1. "bout time
They should just get everybody out of there and bulldoze the whole thing. Our city hall has got to be one of the ugliest bulidings (and plazas) anywhere. And it CERTAINLY has to be on of I.M. Pei's biggest failures (or joke?)....knowing Boston we probably overpaid for it, too.

For those of you who want/need visuals...

3. wonder how i would make a bid on those 12sq-ft panels?
wouldnt mind picking those up if the price was right, seeing as they are being removed anyway.

5. Well, not the building itself
PEI was the co-lead designer for the immediate surrounding plaza and square...which is not any nicer than City Hall itself.

I THINK he had input into City Hall, though.

6. I thought one of the design goals was to make it uncomfortable
The way I heard it, they wanted to make sure that it wouldn't attract vagrants.

Kinda like how McDonald's designed their tables and chairs to get distinctly uncomfortable after you've been sitting in them for a few minutes.

7. Yep, and IM Pei is all over this city
Hancock building, Christian Science Center, Kennedy Library, an MFA expansion,

And personally, I dislike his work. Blegh.
