1. Poe!
Without a doubt. He invented the mystery story. He wrote beautiful, haunting stories and poems. Lovecraft is fun, but Poe is art.

3. Lovecraft is fine,
.... but if you REALLY want creepy, George RR Martin's "Sandkings" has no peer.

4. Sandkings never creeped me out, but I love
The Song of Ice and Fire series by Martin.

9. Perhaps I found Sandkings so creepy
because I'm a confirmed "bugophobe"

5. Lovecraft
had more imagination in what haunts you in your dreams. Its the unknown wet oozing dark unseen thing around the corner. He used your own mind against you. I love Poe also, but Lovecraft scared me. Poe was more like fun with the poems. Poe's stories were great, so I can't really say anything bas about him. I wrote an essay on him in college and researched a lot of his history. Lovecraft just gave me the creeps when I read his stuff.

6. Poe invented the modern horror story and the modern detective story
Lovecraft wouldn't exist without him.

7. Poe although
I think Lovecraft's work betrays a deeper and more intriguing imagination.

10. Lovecraft
"Dream in the Witch House", "Shadow Over Innsmouth", "The Hound" and so many others. Poe was great, but Lovecraft's horror stories were much better.
