DU Guitar players
I am a mandolin player, I recently got a guitar, an old Gibson archtop. It's been twenty years since I had guitar. Now it's time to get some strings, how do I decide what kind should I get?

2. A lot of people like the new strings
That are coated, like Elixirs and Alchemys. The coating makes them stay brighter longer. Personally I play Dean Markley Alchemy lights. Last a long time and are easily bent.

3. As long as it is in good shape
Get medium guage.

You might test different brands, but there is very little difference.

4. Well that's what I meant really,
I think I used to use light strings but I thought maybe heavier strings would be good...

5. I bought a Martin J-40 years ago
Because it sounded so GREAT! I put new light gauge strings on and it sounded thin as hell. So I put medium gauge on and the great sound came back. That might mean that heavy gauge will sound even better. I don't know.

Try it if your fingers and the neck can handle it.

8. I've had the best luck with Ernie Ball strings

I'd go with a medium gage on the old archtop. Nice ax!

9. I prefer GHS boomers 9-42...
...but on an archtop like that, I'd go with a slightly heavier gauge. 10-42 if I played a lot of bends; 11-46 otherwise
