I just switched to Mac's Safari browser!
So far, so good. It seems demonstrably faster and more intuitive. Has anyone out there had any issues with it? (I particularly like the popup blocker function.)

1. Safari
I've been using Safari for about 6 months. So far, they've sent along two updates which I believe made it faster. Of course, I'm also on a cable system so that makes a difference as well. I think you'll like Safari.

2. Be sure to go into preferences and turn on tabs.
you'll be glad you did. command-t opens a new tab.

It is my primary browser now. It's far better than anything out there.

3. I'm having trouble opening certain sites
Slate.com, it particular. It starts to open, then just hangs there. Sometimes it 'unexpectedly quits.' I looked it up on Apple's site and the only thing I could find was a suggestion to delete 'Times RO' in the Library/Fonts directory--it wasn't there.

HELP!

(p.s. I'm at work and don't have 'administrator' access.)

5. Click the "bug" icon in the upper right corner...
... and let Apple know. Otherwise, have you ever seen type so sharp before?

4. Yeah tabbed browsing rules....
Unfortunately I'm on a Windows machine, but I use Phoenix (just haven't upgraded to firebird yet) and tabbed browsing plus being able to control pop-ups is wonderful.

12. Tabbed browsing is relatively new in Safari.

Tabbed browsing is relatively new in Safari. I think it arrived
in the last beta-test version. I was already sold on the feature
from Mozilla.

(Unfortunately, Safari's tabbed-browsing and Mozilla's tabbed
browsing work slightly differently with regard to how the tabs
appear and where the "tab-close" button is.)

7. What Annoys Me About Safari
Edited on Tue Aug-19-03 12:28 PM by Crisco
AND the Mac version of Firebird AND Camino -

Is I'm used to being able to point the cursor in the URL bar at top, click once, and everything is automatically highlighted. In all three of those aps, I have to manually "select all" (oh! quelle horror!) if I want to replace/type a URL by hand.

The other thing is, I don't like the "feel" of Safari. It doesn't feel like a real Mac application to me, I dunno ... lacks a certain grace, or sense of weight, as if it started out as a Windows or Linux app that got migrated.

14. Triple-clicks are actually pretty common in Mac Apps.
Triple-clicks are actually pretty common in Mac Apps.
They usually mean something like "select the whole line"

(With "double click selecting the whole "word" and single
click just placing the cursor.)

Fascinating!

What annoys me most about Internet Explorer is when I click in the
URL bar, it doesn't just place the cursor, it highlights the whole
damned URL! :-)

One person's meat is another's poison, I guess.

There's some truth to that. It's rendering engine IS a piece
of open software. Konquerer?

10. Another great feature
is "check spelling as you type" under edit -- not that I think you would misspell any words but it certainly eliminates any stupid typos from not being fully awake or typing too fast.

If you're using a one-button mouse, when the word is underlined in red, click your cursor on it and the correct spelling or list of suggestions will come up.

I have had some issues with cookies and security protocols on certain sites, but they are getting cleared up as time goes on and Safari becomes more prevalent.

15. Be advised that Safari may have a memory leak...
Several people, including myself, have seen a dramatic slowdown in system functionality when using the Safari browser. I have a Powerbook G4 that I literally run for weeks without a restart.

When Safari 1.0 was released, I noticed that every 2 or three days my system would slow to a crawl. Clearing out all of the caches and restarting would restore the system, however the symptoms continued to return as long as I used the Safari browser.

I have no idea why this slowdown effect appears to affect some systems and does not manifest itself elsewhere. People in this thread seem to be generally happy with the browser, and have had no slow down effects. For the time being I've switched to Mozilla, at least until Mac OS 10.2.7 is released in a week or two. Supposedly it will include Safari 1.1 which may solve my problems.
