Poll question: Yoko Ono
I figure she gets a bad wrap for "breaking up the beatles" and shit like that. It takes two to tango and who are we to judge whether John was under her guiles or they were madly in love so much that the band was secondary. In any case, what are your thoughts?

1. A pretentous, untalented "artist" who rode to fame on her husband's legacy

And oh dear God, that voice of hers...

2. You beat me to it!
Her voice is like chalk screeching on a chalkboard (for those who grew up with chalkboards :-) )

3. Saw her show at SOMA

last year and I found the installations thought-provoking in a kind of innocent way that I associate with the Sixties (caveat - I was born in '68). Musically, though, I'd rather hear me grind the gears on my car.

on edit: I found the lyrics!

If there's someone you can live without, then do so
If there's someone you can just shove out, then do so

You can be my Yoko Ono
You can follow me wherever I go
Be my, be my, be my Yoko Ono

Isn't it beautiful to see two people so much in love
Barenaked as two virgins hand in hand and hand in hand in glove
Now that I'm far away it doesn't seem to me to be such a pain
To have you hanging off my ankle like some ball and chain

You can be my Yoko Ono
You can follow me wherever I go
Be my, be my, be my Yoko Ono

Oh no, here we go
Our life is just one big pun
Ono, here we go as Yoko sings
Aieee!

I know that when I say this
I might be stepping on pins and needles
But I don't like all these people slagging her
For breaking up the Beatles
Don't blame it on Yokey
If I was John and you were Yoko
I would gladly give up musical genius
Just to have you as my very own
Personal Venus
Hit it

You can be my Yoko Ono
You can follow me wherever I go
Be my, be my, be my Yoko Ono
Whoa ohhhhhh

4. "I'll tell you why no one likes her music...
...because she's a woman and an oriental, that's why!"

Just throwing a bone to the old National Lampoon fans out there.

Actually, I think she gets a bad rap. Linda McCartney had much much of a hand in the Beatle's break up as Yoko did, and she's been practically beatified.

6. Yoko was ahead of her time
yes her voice is intense; she is more interesting as a conceptual artist and probably also taught the punks a thing or too. Plus she could probably buy most of us!

Sincerely, the Yoko Defense League ;)

20 minutes worth and no one sold so little to so many in my 11 year old life. Fuck her! She's a con-artist.

8. Come on! Give Yoko a break. She's a good artist and her heart's
in the right place for preserving John's memory. As for the break up of the Beatles....Paul's quest for more and more money probably had more to do with it.

9. yoko good
it helps to have a weird sence of humor to get her art. her shit cookies, cookies shaped like turds, were delicious.

I was her show at the warfield theater in sf. she was great. she talked to the the audience, people kept on bringing her gifts which she graciously and personally accepted. her security was very low key, nearly invisible.she had a fantastic band.

she got ornette coleman to play on her first album.

yea, I think yoko is good, very good

10. I'll agree that she has a pretty bad singing voice
Edited on Fri May-07-04 06:47 PM by chicaloca
as many here have suggested, but how the hell does that make her responsible for the Beatles breakup? How the hell is anybody but the actual members of the Beatles (and maybe their managers) responsible for their breakup? But oh, no, it must have been their wives' faults. :eyes: And how do we know that the guys weren't all happier after the breakup, anyhow? I can imagine that it might be easier to be a solo artist than be stuck with the same small group of people day in and day out, having to compromise and stick together as you all go through the momentous changes that fame inevitably brings. And after watching a documentary on John, I think it's pretty obvious that they loved each other a lot, and I don' see why anything eles should matter. (Hey, all you need is love, right?) :) But I guess it's just easier to blame an eeeeeeevil woman than think about other factors. Because you know, we're all manipulative and duplicitous. :grr:
