Anyone have weird hearing?
Edited on Fri May-07-04 10:54 PM by khephra
I can hear cats walking up stairs.

I can hear the mailman opening our mailbox.

I can now hear trains in our area...and there aren't many trains in this area.

Yet, I have trouble with hearing what's coming out of my stereo or tv.

1. Yeah, me...
I have trouble with nearby conversations but I can sometimes hear phones ringing in other people's houses...in winter, when everything's closed up.

Or maybe it's an auditory hallucination...??

4. I think It comes from "growing up with a TV always on", to quote
the Talking Heads. We get so used to hear certain patterns that we grow to ignore but the strangest ones?

2. I have tinitus
which causes a loud - somtimes 'deafening' - ringing in my ears.
The last hearing Doctor I talked to said there is nothing I can do about it.

I can't stand noisy restraunts.

16. Yes, another tinnitus sufferer here.
I have just learned to live with it. Nothing else you can do. I have constant ringing, clicking and buzzing noises all the time. There is a rare day when my head is quiet.

18. I've had constant tinnitus my whole life.
On top of that, I am very sensitive to electronic whining, which sounds a great deal like my tinnitis. The funny part was that until my early 30's I didn't know that not everybody heard this way. White noise is now my friend.

The killing irony regarding TV's is that I can hear the whine of the electronics better than I can hear the TV itself unless it is turned up. I don't believe that it is hearing in and of itself that is the problem. Rather it is distinguishing what is being said. It has to be a little louder or I have trouble focussing on it.

6. Did you get a hearing aid?
Because if you did that's what is happening. When you first get one you can hear just about everything.

If not, the TV and stereo have more filtered sound than most other sounds and they aren't as clear.

15. Try this then
Turn down the bass and turn up the treble on your TV and stereo. It works for me alot. Maybe your hearing is just worse at different frequencies.

9. Sorta
I had a lot of ear infections, so I've lost some hearing; I also have Meniere's, so I sometimes have tinnitus that makes it hard to hear. The weird part is that it is my left ear that's messed up - and I use that ear when using the telephone because it sounds better somehow.

10. Sounds like my mum
She can hear you whisper in the furthest corner of the garage with the car running, but she can't hear the TV turned up really loud. She's even weirder with smells....

My hearings fine, but my friend Jay can't hear some generally-female tones. I took him to an opera once, and he had a hard time with the womens chorus.

14. yes to a limited extent
i pick up background noises/soft noises well, but when there are direct noises occuring at the same time...it gets sorta blurred with the ambient noise.

17. im missing a few sections of my hearing...
i can the smallest whisper on the other side of the room, but the frequencies which are most commonly in people's regular speaking voices (female voices especially) i must be missing... or something... cause its always very faint and hard to hear... who knows, its just possible all the girls i talk to just mutter and mumble all the time too.

btw, it is possible, like with vision to just lose certian sections of hearing, and have some sections that others cant hear... i can hear down to around 16 htz up to 20k htz, with the gap somewhere in there, i just cant remember what frequencies it is. this came from rupturing an ear drum when i was a kid, i suspect.

normal human hearing is 20htz-20khtz, roughly, no gaps, either.

-LK
