We get Sex and the City, Will and Grace, Friends, ER, all of which contain enough sexual references to educate a teenager in a single episode, and we can see them between 12-4pm. In one sitting.
And who cares if we discuss sex freely. Everyone does it. (woohoo!!) I think that free speech about any topic should be allowed, including sex, marriage and children, no matter what your denomination, race or sexual orientation. And I know that that's what your Consitution says. (hang on, I'm ranting, I'll touch back down in a minute or so).
So why the (insert expletive here) does your government prevent it. I watch CNN and Fox news every so often. The reporters shy away from anything and I mean anything that might be sexual or graphic in nature. Here, if the word "sex" isn't used once in a broadcast, it normally means that there's been something really important that's taken up the better part of the programme (such as 2 idiots invading Iraq, waving their
armies about like huge phallic symbols).
I mean, we all chuffing do it! Even Bush has done it. He's probably enjoyed it. He probably did it last night. And yet he's sayig it's "immoral" for you to do it with people of your own sex. In a country of nearly 300 million (US Census, 2000), how can 1 man hold that much power that he can say "don't do this"? The UK has long recognised that homosexuality, although not everyone's cup of tea or indeed bovril, goes on.
But here's the confusing bit. The most popular show in the US recently was about 5 gay men who made up a straight guy. The country loved it. Why? Because they found it funny that a straight guy had to take advice from people who are marginalised within the political system. Imagine if, 30 years ago, there was a TV show about 5 Black guys who made over a white guy. I suspect that it would have provoked outrage (amongst the racists) but also have gone down well with the more tolerant members of society. Today, I doubt anyone would blink an eye as, generally, most people are tolerant of race and the show would probably do pretty poorly. So why should sex and sexuality be marginalised? Why should American domestic policies (such as the economy and pollution issues) be sidelined recently such that the American leader can issue a statement saying "all you californicans having blasphemous sex are evil and our laws won't protect you".
For the Love of God Mr Bush, wake up. Smell the roses. The UK and the rest of Europe have gay people in power and we welcome them. We accept them. And they are judged in the same way as anyone else. Sure we make stereotypic judgements about them, but all minority groups have a cultural stereotype - even us middle class White guys have one. But that's the difference in Europe - we are all educated enough to accept the differences in people.
The US is a new country in comparison to Europe. We've fought wars whilst the US was still unihabited. We've blown each other to bits whilst the US was populated by people wearing loin cloths. And now this new country, populated by the people who wanted to make a new start, to run away from what they were and to reinvent themselves, is running the world. They have the power, the men and the money to change the world to be however they want it to be...and europe is going to let them.
Democrats, Republicans, Ralph Nader - all the same. All believe that America is the best country in the world. Granted, patriotism is a good thing. But ask any European, any Asian, anyone else in the world - "what is the best country in the world" and the answer will always be "mine - but we need to think past that". From the academics to the brickies, the journalists to the children, we all know that we need to work as a world, not as individual nations states. Which is why the EU constitution is causing such a fuss in the UK. We value our interdependence on both the US and Europe and the fact that we bring them together. Signing the Constitution limits the way in which the world works together. Yes, Europe will work better together but the world...I think not. Brussels hates the US - the US hates Brussels.
So instead of complaining about Bush, complain about America. Instead of complaining about the war, complain about why we went to war. Instead of complaining about policies, complain about the reasons. Educate your children as to what it is to be part of a globalised society and to accept that other people are not the same as you and sometime will never be the same as you, no matter how hard you want them to be.
And for God's sake, get someone in the White House who can build a secure bridge between the US and Europe and Asia and South America and Africa and Oceana such that the world can work together.
Right...rant over. And Moderators are more than welcome to do what they want with this post.
