My kid ain't got soul--Woe is me
My poor kid is trying to get into jazz band. (Piano) She is a competent classical pianist for her age 13-but she just is not feeling it here. Kind of painful for all of us.

1. It takes time
to get out of the structure of classical piano and understand jazz...

I can't remember which classical composer it was who is said to have studied under another classical master and said that he did so in order to learn all the rules....so he could know which ones to break....

If she really wants it, it will come, in time.

6. From 'The Kid'
Okay, this is from Wubette's daughter. The one with no soul.

I DON'T HAVE TIME! I need to get this down by the 24th so I can get into the jazz band (the AWARD winning jazz band that would DIE with out me, I mean, imagine how much better it could be with me in it! How have they survived all these years?). Therefore, I don't have time!

So...the question is... how do you fake soul?

9. UUmmmmm
from my memory of years, and years ago......

just a few reminders:

eigthnotes are really dotted eights in almost all rock, soul, or jazz. Instead of da,da,da,da, it's daaa, d -daaa, -d-daaa etc.

syncopation is key

everything is based on an eight-bar chord progression.

playing behind the beat means something like a 1/16 pause before the phrase......

I went to so many, many jazz clinics and this is about all I can remember.....

Good luck!!!!! :hi:

2. Been there!
Keep getting her great jazz CDs to listen to and let her keep trying. Both of my boys are jazzers, one at the University, the other going to do jazz studies next year at a conservatory. The oldest just couldn't get it at first but he is great now. It is painful isn't it? She is just 13, she has plenty of time. Hang in there.

you cant learn to have soul... it is however possesed by all people, it just has to be discovered...
