What is the etiquette about e-mailing...
and private messaging people?

I'm just curious - I've never done either - & being a nice, well-brought-up, polite, young man & I wouldn't want to offend anyone with unsolicited messages.

Thank you.

1. Just consider email....
an electronic letter. Try to follow the same writing conventions
as you would when writing a classic letter to a friend.
As for electronic messaging, it all depends with whom you are
chatting, etc. Spelling usually goes out the window and abbreviations
for phrases become the norm.

I think there are some resources on these topics on the Net somewhere.
Use google.com and search for "email etiquette" and "messaging
etiquette".

4. be yourself and don't worry about it
unless you email some all the time, you won't have a problem. I've been here only a few months and have private messaged people quite a few times. There are times when it is best to PM someone, for example I have PMed someone to forward on information I thought they might find useful without starting a thread on it where they may not even find it. It is also a good place to clear up any misunderstandings rather than play that out in public. It is not a good place for mass emails about anything. Just use your best judgement. For the most part, no one will be offended by anything, we all like being part of DU and interacting with DUers.

5. I deleted my e-mail from my info here
after a jerk I had an argument with (who is now tombstoned) started sending insulting e-mails to my home.
I felt personally violated.
We keep what's here, HERE.
