What point in North America is furthest from an ocean?
I don't know the answer, so this is a legitimate question, not a quiz.

I would think it would be WI or MN or a place in Canada not far north of either of those two states.

1. Rugby, North Dakota is the mathematical centre of North America.

Just so you know.

And I don't think it's any place in MN or WI. Too close to Hudson Bay.

2. But I'm looking for furthest from an ocean
not the centre

Though you are right, even MN or WI could be too close to Hudson Bay. Which is why I'm thinking now that it might be in Canada. But then in Canada above MN and WI, it's getting close to the arctic ocean and all those northern bays and islands, etc.

23. But if you are at the center of the continent...
Then you are furthest from the oceans. It is implied in the definition.

6. Worldwide, it's a place in China - I was able to find that out
http://geography.about.com/library/faq/blqzfarfromocean.htm

There's a place in northern China that is over 1,600 miles (2,575 kilometers) from any ocean. It's at 46°17' North, 86°40' East.

Though I can't verify the accuract of something that's at about.com, but given the size of Asia, this sounds about right.

12. That's not the furthest point from land, though, AFAIK
I remember reading a few years ago there's an island almost due west of South Africa, in the Atlantic ocean somewhere, that is considered the most remote island.

http://geography.about.com/library/weekly/aa102700a.htm

I remember readinga website a few years ago from the ship that goes there once a week - which is really a British mail ship that takes a few passengers at a time.

Sounds like a wonderful place to be!!

Here's the page:
http://geosciences.ou.edu/~bweaver/Ascension/sh.htm

Reading the two sites, I see that the first link is part of the chain of the second group - and it appears that it's the first link island itself which is the most remote island in the world.

i don't know for sure, but I'd imagine Hawaii must be the second or close to - its also really, really far the hell away from any major landmass.

Using a map and ruler, it would appear to be somewhere in the area of the Black Hills in South Dakota.
