Red VS Blue... Who Decided That These Were The Colors?
(Has this been discussed before?)

I guess it's the accepted default now... Dems are blue and Republicans are red. But who decided?

I remember watching the election returns (1996 maybe) and one network had it the other way around. So as of then there was no consensus among the networks.

Is it because of alliteration? (R)ed (R)epublicans? --- I always thought red was the symbolic color of communism anyway... so this adds to the confusion even more.

I saw this and thought you were referring to another red versus blue. This is the lounge, after all.

2. Bushevik Operatives & Mockingbirds.
That's easy. Look back at historical Election Eves. During the Carter/Raygun Years, when "red" meant Commie, the Democrats were "red".

After the Fall of the Soviet Union, when it was more advantageous to market the Democrats as Union Blue, miraculously the Democratic colors became Blue, like the Union Army and the Busheviks Red, like the Confederate Army.

To understand how advertisers and marketers think, which makes this seeming nonsense relevant, read some "Advertising Age" magazine.

(warning: you'll need a shower afterwards)

Oh that Liberal Media!

4. In Canada, it's the opposite
The Liberal party is red and the Conservative party is blue. My party, the NDP (true liberal/progressive) is orange. Go figure.

5. It's too bad
because red sticks out and blue fades back.

Put red and blue next to each other on a tv screen, same size. The red will appear larger, and more striking.

6. The DOD Name Dept. Their is some Gen that just does names.
The DODND do odd names for people when the Wars get slow. Since that leaves them little time and they did not want to use White states it ended up Red and Blue.Well that is my take on it all.

10. That was then, this is now
Red and blue mean challenger and incumbent party and have no fixed party reference. Therefore this year Dems are red. So stop praying for a blue victory, folks!
