Amazingly, I have a dog question!
:D

I was talking to a friend who claims his sister has trained her dog to shake on command -- no, not the paw thing. Shake. As in doggy's filthy and wet, she brings him into the mud room, and he gives himself a good shake when she says "shake!" before getting the towel out and coming in the house.

I've never heard of anyone training a dog to do this, and frankly I haven't the slightest idea where to begin! Anyone ever heard of or tried such a thing? :bounce:

1. Have treats handy, get the dog wet, and when he shakes,
say "Shake!" and give him a treat. Several repetitions should do the trick.

2. As a general Rule
You can "train" a dog to do something like this by first saying the word "Shake" everytime he shakes himself dry and rewarding him or her for doing it. Sooner or later the Dog connects the word "Shake" with Shaking and connects that he gets a reward if he shakes when he hears the word. Very easy if the dog is trainable AND you have the time to do the training i.e. be with the dog and say "Shake" when he does it and reward him when he does.

3. Wow, that's weird
I had to take my puppy out while it was raining last night. When we got back up to the porch, I said "shake!", and she did! I figured that's a hell of a lot better trick that the paw thing.

4. My dog will shake on command
We started just saying "shake off" whenever she shook after coming out of the water. She learned the word and now she likes to shake when we say shake. She enjoys the attention.
