1. I just got that stupid song stuck in my head
yesterday. Must be contagious.

Dave Barry included it in his 'Book of Bad Songs' for deep, meaningful lyrics like "then there came a killing frost." A killing FROST? What are we killing, TOMATOES?

8. Dave Barry...
... also included the Richard Harris version of "MacArthur Park" in that hilarious book, and he's right... it's truly awful.

But that song never gets airplay, so I have to agree with OP... "Wildfire is not only a terrible song, it inexplicably gets constant airplay!

22. "Shannon" is the greatest "drowned dog" song of all time
Wait a minute; have there been any others?

Did you know that song was originally written by Henry Gross for the Beach Boys, and that it's about the death of Carl Wilson's Irish Setter? The BBs declined to record it, but Gross decided to record it himself anyway.

7. And admittedly, I love "Surfin' Bird."
I don't think I've ever played it once without immediately wanting to hear it again! I guess it's the song's inherent stupidity that draws me to it time and again.

13. Yes, pretty damned dumb...
However - dumbest lyrics ever have to belong to 'Horse With No Name'. Odd that both of these songs are equine inspired. But, anyway, how can anyone top (bottom?), "Plants and birds and rocks and things"?

14. Stupidester than "Chevy Van? YOU be the judge...
SAMMY KERSHAW LYRICS

Chevy Van
(Sammy Johns)

I gave a girl a ride in my wagon
Now she crawled in and took control
She was tired as her mind was draggin'
And I said get some sleep--we'll get on down the road
Like a picture she was laying there
And moonlight dancing off her hair
She woke up and took me by the hand
She's gonna love me in my Chevy van
And that's all right with me
Her young face was like that of an angel
And her long legs were tanned and brown
Better keep your eyes on the road son
Better slow this vehicle down
'Cause like a picture she was laying there
And moonlight dancing off her hair
She woke up and took me by the hand
She's gonna love me in my Chevy van
And that's all right with me
I put her out in a town that was so small
You could throw a rock from end to end
A dirt road main street, she walked off in her barefeet
And it's a shame I won't be passin' through again
Like a picture she was laying there
And moonlight dancing off her hair
She woke up and took me by the hand
We made love me in my Chevy van
And that's all right with me
Yeah like a picture she was laying there
And moonlight dancing off her hair
She woke up and took me by the hand
We made love me in my Chevy van
And that's all right with me
All right with me

airbrushed "scenes" on the sides, too.

....song was making money off that "van craze".

25. Whatchu talkin' 'bout, Westegg? I LOVE THAT SONG!!
This was my dream when I was 13 years old: to ride from town to town in a Chevy Van customized in a "Conan the Barbarian" motif, having rampant hot sex with strange women with long tanned and brown legs. Then herpes, AIDS, and high gas prices came into the picture and RUINED MY DREAM.

17. It can't possibly compare with...
Muskrat, muskrat candlelight
Doin' the town and doin' it right
In the evenin'
It's pretty pleasin'

Muskrat Susie, Muskrat Sam
Do the jitterbug out in muskrat land
And they shimmy
And Sammy's so skinny

And they whirled and they twirled and they tangoed
Singin' and jingin' the jango
Floatin' like the heavens above
It looks like muskrat love

Nibbling on bacon, chewin' on cheese
Sammy says to Susie "Honey, would you please be my missus?"
And she say yes
With her kisses

And now he's ticklin' her fancy
Rubbin' her toes
Muzzle to muzzle, now anything goes
As they wriggle, and Sue starts to giggle

And they whirled and they twirled and they tangoed
Singin' and jingin' the jango
Floatin' like the heavens above
It looks like muskrat love

La da da da da ...

:argh:

28. You guys
got no heart. I love those songs-they bring back the seventies. "A Killing Frost" is an archaic term, but still in use among agrarian peoples. Means what it says-kills the plants. "Wildfire" makes me want to put on my wafflestompers and my CFO jacket and head out to the pines.(Maybe even with Carolina). Michael Murphy now does strictly Cowboy tunes. "Muskrat Love" was a delightful, charming, romantic tune, great for young lovers. Darryl Dragon, onetime roomie of Charles Manson, is still an icon. Saw him and the missus in concert in 1978 with my new bride. Say what you will about the music of the seventies-it was fun. I guess that's why they call it "Pop".
