Grammar peeve: "you and I" vs. "you and me"
"Slither" by Velvet Revolver is on my radio right now. I cringe every time Scott Weiland sings "to wash away the sins of you and I." It's "YOU AND ME," Scott. Here's how it works. Take out the "you." Would you say "to wash away the sins of I"? No, you would say "of me," which would be awkward but grammatically correct.

"You and I" or "He and I" or anybody and "I" are used as the object of a sentence. He and I went to the store last night. "You and me" or "him and me," etc., are used as the object. Diana went to the store with him and me last night.

There, I feel better now. Would somebody please forward this to Scott Weiland?

1. Ha ha ha
One of my peeves, too. And you learned it just the way I did - take out the "you and" and which do you use? Ah, the lost art of grammar.

4. The ones that blow my mind are..
...The people who are public speakers such as radio and television personalities. Don't they go to some English class to become announcers and communicators? Or are their classes, "How to look good 101"?
I always hear them screw this up. Things such as "Join John and I on Monday mornings". I'm not the most eloquent speaker of all time and I don't claim to be, but shouldn't professional yappers know proper English?

5. I don't think
people learn grammar anymore.

I had to stop watching Tom Brokaw because he said "gonna" all. the. time. Bugged the hell out of me.

You're right! I'm blaming the baby for that one. He didn't let me sleep much last night. :)

One of the dangers of starting a grammar complaint thread is that you're almost certain to make an obvious grammatical error.

11. Hee hee hee
I once read an online profile/personal ad for a guy (a hunky guy!) who said he had no tolerance for bad spellers, then went on to misspell "refrigerator".

He thanked me for gently pointing out his error (in the context of a very flattering note about him and the persona he presented in his profile) but didn't grant me a date. Damn him!
