Dead Men Tell No Tales -- Nor Claim Insurance

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore has jailed a woman who earned S$330,000 ($196,000) in bogus insurance claims while pretending her husband was dead for 15 years, a court official said Wednesday.

Renuga Devi Sinnaduray, 47, and her brother-in-law, had knowingly deceived three insurance companies into believing her husband, Gandaruban Sinnaduray, was dead, a district judge said.

She was sentenced to a year in jail Tuesday after pleading guilty. Her brother-in-law, Moganaruban Subramaniam, is also due in court and has been named a co-conspirator, along with her "dead" husband, the judge said.

Her husband is at large, a Singapore newspaper said.

The court heard that in 1987 Sinnaduray had produced a fake death certificate obtained in Sri Lanka, where her husband had fled after his Singapore car rental business ran into problems.
