Whitewater rafting students find themselves up shit-creek
Edited on Thu May-13-04 01:36 PM by DS1
SPOKANE, Wash. -- What students in Paul Green's whitewater rafting class experienced on the final outing in their outdoor recreation course should make them eligible for extra credit.

The students in Green's rafting course loaded into two 14-foot inflatable rafts about 500 yards upriver from the treatment plant Monday, minutes before the holding tank ruptured.

"We didn't hear anything, but the smell was just overwhelming ... unbelievable," Green said Tuesday. "It was a mini-waterfalls, but it sure wasn't water."

Green decided to abort the float about a half mile downstream from the plant, before entering the raging 8-to-10-foot waves of Bowl and Pitcher rapids, which were "boiling brown."

In the short stretch from the sewage plant to the Bowl and Pitcher campground, the rafters - wearing wetsuits and rubber "booties" - were contaminated by the spill sloshing in the bottom of their boats.

9. Hmmm...
One student said, "We were in the middle of a giant river of stinking crap, just carrying us along. I thought for a minute I was on The O'Reilly Factor."
