Okay, is this a cicada?

I found it on my porch. There were two, one on each porch.

I know they're coming! Is this one of the little buggers?

2. Yes
That is a cicada. Now picture 10,000,000,000 per square foot everytime you step outside. That's what's coming.

7. Oh, well, if I found him on my porch . . .
I still would have taken a picture. :-)

I knew it was! It's the last summer of BUSH, and pestilence is in the air . . .

Maybe I'll make myself feel better by putting Bush's face on the thing! That'll do it. :bounce:

12. Anybody else remember the Dylan song from two broods back?
I glanced into the chamber where the judges were talking,
Darkness was everywhere, it smelled like a tomb.
I was ready to leave, I was already walkin',
But the next time I looked there was light in the room.
And the locusts sang, yeah, it give me a chill,
Oh, the locusts sang such a sweet melody.
Oh, the locusts sang their high whining trill,
Yeah, the locusts sang and they were singing for me.

http://www.absolutelyric.com/a/view/Bob_Dylan/Day_of_the_Locusts/

Pretty third-rate as Dylan songs go -- but, hey, has anybody else ever written a song about the 17-year locusts?

14. My husband is from CA
He never heard cicadas until we got off our moving van here, and they were screaming (late summer). He said, "what the hell is that? It sounds like when I was a kid and my friend convinced me to huff some gasoline!"

13. I've only seen one in my yard
but you can't walk on my mom's lawn without stepping on one. What's up with that?

My yard is very shady, and a veritable refuge for birds. Could they be eating the cicadas as fast as they come out of the ground?

I'm in the woods -- these are the only two I've seen.

I thought there would be more -- maybe you're right, the birds are eating them.

21. Last time in Ohio, we were in a house only 6 years old and I
think that relatively recent bulldozing during construction must have wiped out many of them underground. We didn't have nearly as many as the older houses did.

The untouched area next to us was full of them so many eventually migrated to our yaard.

Served with rice. The only prep was to remove the wings and legs. I don't think there was any seasoning beyond sonme soy sauce.

22. For those of you who are about to be swarmed
I live in Mid Mo, and about four years ago we had a phenomenon much like you are about to experience. Three different cycles of cicadas all coming out at once. A few words of wisdom:

1. Get a pair of earplugs. While the sound of a few cicadas is pleasant on a summer's eve, the sound of millions and billions of these little shits will literally drive you nuts.

2. Supervise your pets to prevent them from eating cicadas. It seems that animals love these munchy crunchy treats, but they can also be hurt by them. The hard shell is incredibly hard on an animal, and if one eats enough cicadas it will cause internal bleeding in the bowels. Watch their poop for blood, and if you see it, get them to a vet quick.

3. Be vigilant with your trees. Cicadas bore into trees and lay their eggs there. Sprays are ineffective, the best method is to loosely wrap your trees with cheescloth to prevent the bugs from landing directly on the trunk and branches.

For more information, go to <http://www.msj.edu/cicada/faq.html#eating>

23. Cicada March on Washington
I can't believe there in Virginia so early. None here in Missouri yet. Heck, there was a freeze here a week or two ago.

Can we register these guys to vote? Between me and the Lorax, I think we can slam dunk this election. Oh, right, they'll be dead by November. Hell, maybe we all will. (Can they vote absentee before they kick?)

How is there song? Here they go "U-WEE, U-WEE, U-WEE, U-WEE, U-WEEEEEeeeeeeeennn"

will be affected?

I haven't seen any yet, although I do live in a new subdivision. None of the houses are older than 2 years, so maybe they've been bulldozed up.

39. They'll be everywhere in the affected states
They're pretty much harmless, but noisy. Unlike locusts, they don't denude vegetation. They may cause some damage to young trees when laying their eggs, but other than that, they're innocuous creatures. Weird-looking, but they don't bite or destroy stuff.
