9. mescaline is one of the alkaloid compounds in peyote...
...done both...major body experience

peyote is VERY hard to find. It's used as a sacrament for several churches in the US.

23. Sorta...
properly done, mescaline is the good stuff in peyote with most the poisonous alkaloids removed. The ones that make you puke but don't get you high. I've heard some bullshit about how the puking is part of the mystical experience, but it's more like Native Americans didn't have chemistry degrees.

The cactus grows wild, and buds shouldn't be terribly difficult to find if you know where and can get that far out in the desert waere the narcs haven't destroyed them.

As I remember, it was a very mellow trip.

34. not quite
actual peyote has some stuff in it other than mescaline.
Mescaline is one thing in peyote, but peyote also has some other alkaloids in it. So the effect of peyote and the effect of mescaline is a bit different.
Sort of like THC and weed.

36. Mescaline is the active ingredient in peyote
but it can be extracted. Mescaline is usually taken in powdered form. Peyote is the whole "bud." The main difference between the two (yes, I've taken both) is that peyote makes pretty much everyone puke right after they take it, mescaline doesn't.

The experience is wonderful, truly one of the best hallucinogens in nature.

5. Great stuff!
Watch out, though, it takes a while to come on, and often ralphing is the first sign of it. I'd probably say I like Psyllocybin better, but mescaline's an extraordinary ride. Acid's a bit like a rocket trip to Mars (okay, I took rather large dosages) but it has its moments too.

we would get buttons from Mexico fresh.

Depending on the preperation, it would unsettle the stomach, sometimes resulting in eventual regurgitation, but it was one of the best trip inducers ever. Visual, stereotypically psychedellic color enhancement, euphoric, educational.

13. No, but thanks for the flashback
The giant hookworm of death that attached itself to me and tried to ruin me a few years ago used to talk about peyote all the time, only he called it pie-oaty.

I ate mushrooms a few times in my early twenties. It was fun - mostly I just laughed so hard my abs hurt for days afterward - until the last time, when I started hallucinating and almost fell in a campfire. That's what I imagine pie-oaty is like.

18. i tried mescaline once when i was 19..
it was a great experience. We did it up in the hills during a full moon on some land my friend's dad owned. There were about 5 or 6 of out there on the stuff, and we had some great discussions.

I had a couple of good hallucinations; one where a piece of egg crate foam I was using as a blanket begin to envelope my body, and another where my friend seemed to be at least eight feet tall. There were also lots of airplanes that provided hours of enjoyment with their red and white flashing lights!

24. Peyote is medicine and I would not recommend using it recreationally.
Edited on Fri May-14-04 09:17 AM by Zorra
Peyote is a spiritual medicine to the Native American Church. In North America, it is used ceremonially, by participants in a ceremony often called a peyote meeting. The meetings I have been to were beautiful visually and aurally, and meaningfully "structured", but in a way that would probably be difficult to understand for folks not real familiar with native traditions.

IMO, the "effects" of peyote use differ from person to person depending on the heart, mind, and needs of the person using it, and the reasons that a person has for using it.

Sometimes a person may vomit after using peyote, and if this happens I have been told that it is a good idea to dig a hole and bury the vomit in it. People often feel differently and/or see visions when using peyote. I have been told that the nature of these feelings and visions depends on how a person approaches using the medicine. Peyote is very powerful, and can be unpredictable. Peyote can make someone temporarily feel peaceful and happy. I have been told that this is something good to try to take and keep from a peyote experience. I have seen peyote cause temporary anxiety in a few people. Sometimes using smaller amounts of peyote can bring strong visions, and sometimes larger amounts do not bring any visions. It seems that each seperate time peyote is used, it usually brings about a different experience.

Conveying what peyote is like in words is very difficult because it is often so different from what most people consider "reality", and I can only speak from my own point of view, from interpreting my own experiences, what I have been told, and from what friends have told me about their experiences. I have not used peyote for many years now.

Peyote is becoming scarce because people that pick peyote for profit and sell it to recreational users often do not harvest peyote properly and they take too many "buttons". IMO, using peyote just to get "high" is not a real good idea, and recreational usage makes it more difficult for folks that use peyote for medicinal/spiritual purposes to obtain.

40. good advice
psycoactive substances like peyote & lsd are not toys, despite the way I and many people have used it. Sacrament is as good a term as any. Lucky to get what I have out of that stuff considering the cavalier manner in which I used them. Do miss it though, been years, just waiting for the proper set & setting.
Peyote is a very slow growing cacti, completely unsuitable for large scale exploitation. Peyote should be left to Native Americans and their guest.
