Question about stretch marks
I need help. I've lost a little over 125 pounds in the last two years and I've got stretch marks that I want desperately to get rid of. Anybody got any good remedies for making them go away? Help?

1. There are some lotions that claim to help.
Never tried them though.

Side question: What's that glowing yellow orb in the sky called?

They're battle scars in your fight against obesity -- be proud of them! (personally I don't think they look bad)

6. I just don't see it that way
I have them in places I'd rather not...like my arms and legs, not just my stomach. But thanks for trying to make me feel better. :)

What an accomplishment. You should be so proud of yourself. :loveya:

Saw this pamphlet a Macy's 'Better than Botox'. StriVectin-SD for stretch marks. Do a little google research and check it out.

Heard coco butter works and it's cheap. I don't know - no stretch marks just wrinkles here

And I am. :) It's been hard sometimes but I see the light at the end of the tunnel now (only about 20 more pounds to go).

And thanks for the suggestions.

8. Mederma
Edited on Fri May-14-04 12:54 PM by supernova

http://www.mederma.com/

I used to belong to a listserv for adults w/ congenital heart disease. Many of these folks had had repeated surgeries (2 or more over their lives) and all swore by this stuff to minimize scarring.

Sidebar and disclaimer: I interviewed with this company yesterday. They seem like an interesting firm. I am not marketing Mederma. They just happened to the the one I thought of that I also got independent word of mouth that it works.

edit 2: Congrats on your weight loss! :wow:

That stuff is a little outta my price range at the moment. But if the less expensive solutions don't work...maybe.

11. First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!
Regarding your question, please see a dermatologist. There a some creams that are promising, but are only available via prescription. There is also a cream, over the counter, which is quite promising--Strivictin (not quite sure about the spelling), it's $135 and available at Lord & Taylor.

$135...*blink* That may have to wait til I get truly desperate. :)

If some of the other suggestions don't work out I will keep it in mind to see a dermatologist though. Thanks. :)

Can't vouch for it personally but my wife used it after our daughter was born in 76 and doesn't have a mark.
Congratulations on your loss (that sounds strange)

i got stretch marks after i had my son,
not a lot and very faint, thank goodness.
and i made sure to use VitaminE the whole time i was pregnant,
i'm sure that helped.

but i have been considering doing something else now though,
to try and get rid of them for good.

let me know if you find anything besides VE that works.

edited to add: CONGRATS! on the weightloss. You should be very proud of yourself. :toast:

29. The old fashioned way
Eating less (around 1200 calories a day maximum), eating more healthy (more veggies, less sweets, more lean meats), and exercising a lot more (4 days a week in the gym at least).

23. What are stretch marks?
Obviously, I have seen them and I know how people get them. Even have a few myself. But what is the physical mechanism? Are they like permanent scars? Or Bruises? Maybe a miniature version of varicose veins where the blood backs up a little in the veins on the surface of the skin?

28. The skin literally splits
because it's having to grow out too fast to cover all the body, usually due to rapid weight gain, like a pregnancy. Every stretch mark represents a place the skin has stretched too far too fast and healed over.

32. So kinda like a spread out scar?
Now I have another question. Many darker-skinned folks develop large (and sometimes painful) scars known as keloid (sp?) scars. Does this also happen w/ stretch marks?

If stretch marks are like scars than I doubt that creams, etc would help.

35. Yes, a stretch mark is a kind of scar
if you look at a "new" stretch mark, it's as pink as any surgical scar though way less deep.

I don't know why the keloids and non-keloids. The "T" on my chest is keloidish, though not painful. Hoever I do sunscreen it like crazy! I had the surgery as a child, and the surgeon told me then that kids heal with keloids more often than adults do. I'm white, btw.

31. Velma, I'd definitely ask a dermatologist
Skin is a complicated organ. You don't want to waste money, or heaven forbid, make anything worse. I'd ask a dermatologist what they'd recommend. They may suggest something as inexpensive as Vitamin E capsules.

:wow: You lost one whole me? :wow: Congradulations, big time. I've heard that cocoa butter helps. You can get a whole jar of it for less than five bucks, but beware, it's pretty greasy. Also works as a good body moisturizer.
