I mean, it took them ten years to come up with the horse concept? I've got to give the O-man credit where it's due. Plus he had the good taste not to sacrifice his daughter like Agamemnon, so avoiding the same kind of, uh, awkward homecoming.

What a weird ending. This guy's supposed to be a hero and he slaughters practically everyone in town for hitting on his wife. I guess that was virtuous then.

Only thing about dropping the gods from the story is, that they'd lose some interesting character development re: the relationship between Odysseus and Athena, which is a milestone in Western literature.

in the movie they make a 10 year war seem like it took a month at most...but hey, the movie was still about 2 hours and 40 minutes. Tough to condense all that happened.

Fight choreography, and set construction.

The casting was wrong headed, Achelles is not a sensitive brooding warrior, he is a glory obscessed jerk. Brad should have been Hector, and less stupidity would have been done to the Iliad's story line. What is left of the story is Hector's story, and it is not a romance.

Consider -- No gods, No Iphigenia, Ajax dies, *AGAMEMNON DIES* (which alone cannot happen within the cannon of classical Greek literature/mythos. Agamemnon has to come home, so that Clytemnestra, Orestes, and the furies can do what they all do. ) Really, I did not like the violence done to the story.

If you take the theology out of it, you lose so many important things, like Aphrodite rescueing Paris in combat. Without the rest of the context of the gods, the issue of faith is reduced to superstition.

In Homer, the gods are act in the drama.

Deus ex Machina. If the gods don't act upon the human characters, there is no plot.

I can't wait to see it! I love ancient Greece and Rome... and Troy. Our literature is good, but it isn't EPIC anymore. Sometimes I just love a really good Epic.

I thought it was a cheesy beefcake movie. When Achilles called that guy a "Sac of Wine" (I think it was an insult), we just busted out laughing.

But the cinematography was brillant. Sus and I think it was because we were sitting 4 rows from the front and Brad Pitt looked like a gay man's wet dream. It was ok at best

emulate Russell Crow..........unsuccessfully. Even his attempts at an accent seemed unnatural. Brad is just not convincing as a warrior type. I love him in many of the offbeat movies he's been in as various characters, but this seems to have been miscast.

Besides Russel Crow, not sure who would make a better Achilles.

In a preview some woman was telling Achilles, who's apparently an American with a really bad british accent, that he's going to be remember for thousands of years!

Looks about as good as that NBC miniseries from a few years ago, Odyssey: Starring Vanessa Williams.

Now that's not surprising. Must be hard for good actors to play off acting lightweights after working with a better trained class of actors (from the Shakespearean school).

He's great in 12 monkeys, Seven, Snatch, Fight Club and so on, but this movie seems like it's just a sad attempt for him to have an "epic" under his belt...

I know cuz a friend of mine said they were filming in front of his house! He saw Clooney and Pitt but no Roberts. So I'm surprised they're showing previews already.

as an announcement to anyone that hadn't heard yet that there was going to be a sequel, and then they listed the 12 actors. It looks as if the only one who's not back is Roberts, but Zeta-Jones is in this time.

At least John Logan had nothing to do with it.

to say it was a bad movie is an insult to bad movies everywhere. It is unintentionally hilarious. The acting was an abomination all around and if Helen wasn't actually in the movie it wouldn't have made one bit of difference, they could have just referred to her, might have helped. Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom looked Fab-u-lous but that was the highlight for me. just say no to Troy unless you are having bad movie night at your house, I'd peg it one notch better than show girls.

Given that the movie was made before the news about the prisoner abuse in Iraq leaked out, the scene between Priam (Peter O'Toole) and Achilles (Brad Pitt) was rather prescient.

I thought it was weird, too, that various people ended up escaping, and that others who survived in the original story were killed off in a very "Hollywood" way. However, the epic is old and robust enough that I'm not as perturbed about these alterations (or even about the armour and other anachronisms) as I might otherwise be. After all, they haven't been claiming it was meant to be an accurate depiction of Bronze Age Greece (unlike Gibson's "The Patriot" where they trumpeted all those historical advisors).

Admittedly I'm not used to seeing Agamemnon being made to be the baddie, but in this context, I think it's interesting social commentary on the current world situation.
