Cicada Check-In: Got 'em yet?

Cincinnati, Ohio here... Supposedly the "Ground Zero of Cicada Emergence." Brood X has yet to emerge. I'm pretty disappointed. Hype, I say. Nothin' but hype. :D

I'm personally looking forward to them. I was in my early 20's last time they showed, and there's simply nothing funnier than watching expensive-business-suit-lawyer-types being dive-bombed by the little creatures while trying to enjoy their al fresco downtown lunches. }(

The only brood Connecticut gets is Brood II. The current big one is Brood X.

but I expect it'll be a few days after you guys get 'em, down there. I dread trying to walk our crazy dog -- he saw a couple of free-range cicadas last summer having sexual congress on the sidewalk, and I had to drag him for half a block to keep him from going back and eating them. I think he thinks they're tiny birds, one of which (a fledgling robin) he managed to kill last spring/early summer. I told Mr. Nownow I was seriously considering getting a muzzle for him. The last thing I want to spend three weeks doing is cleaning up cicada puke off the floor every time he goes for a walk.

I wasn't in the area -- was in coastal Carolina -- the last time around, but I remember the emergence 34 years back. It was a doozy -- I wore a scarf for weeks because I have really wild hair, and they tend to get caught in it.

I live in Anderson Township. I just picked one up a few minutes ago, it seemed very lifeless though. This is probably due to the cool weather.

I've yet to hear of their emergence in the Nation's Capital, but they're sure to pester the tourists. Ought to be fun...

My backyard is full of 'em. Not much in the front yard cuz I've got no trees there (they lay their eggs on trees and the little guys drop off to the ground and burrow in and grow grow grow for 17 years). My mom thought she heard another wave will be out in June???

Must be a bit warmer in VA as opposed to OH. We just got a good drenching, so I imagine the billions of little critters will show themselves soon. I just want to... well... get it over with, ya know?

That sound... ohh, that sound is seared into my memory from 17 years ago... :D

remember driving on Glebe Road and it looked like I was driving in a sleet/wet snow storm the swarms were so thick. Lucky me, I have lived numerous places - but am always in heavy cicada areas for Brood x.

But then again I live in California and I think we get yuppies instead.

I did notice a few yuppies however burrowing out of the ground, lattes in hand.

I'm pretty sure I saw some "early-bugs" last spring. There were a couple of shells and a couple of shed skins and a few adult carcasses that I came across.

I'm guessing that they don't HAVE to wait the full cycle and can emerge early if they want to (or if they are confused.)

I will never forget the deafening sound they make, especially a few weeks in, when they're fully emerged and shagging like mad.

and they are loud. Our neighbor was having a tree cut and you could the cicada's over the sounds of the chainsaws

In the morning, you can't even take a step w/o almost stepping on one.

Are there any in Connecticut?

I've only seen a few in my yard, but I can hear them in the woods all around us. I live in Burke, near Springfield, VA. I saw the first one yesterday. I stepped out onto my front porch to cut some roses, and there was one lying on its back, fluttering its wings madly. I picked it up and put it in an azalea bush.

They're kind of klutzy. :)

I help them out as well. I mean, they spend 17 years in the ground, they're not going to be the swiftest of flyers (or have the great eyesight)

I used to live in eastern VA back when they had a major emergence in '74. I awoke to some LOUD cicadas on summer mornings. It's a sound like no other in nature. For the uninitiated, it's hard to describe, other than a rapidly rhythmic chirping-screeching sound. It's the wings, I believe. Very vivid memories evoked by the sound.

Our cat Spooky used to catch them and bring 'em to our doorstep. They looked like giant dead houseflies to my innocent 7-year old eyes. :-)

up after being underground for years...at least that's what we have been told..I live in southern Ontario, Canada and we have a large pine tree and maple tree in our back yard...We see them every year....It's a little early for them yet though....These ones look like the ones I've seen on TV and certainly sound the same...I guess they are the same ones...:)

I want to know if Cicadas ever come to Connecticut.

in the past couple of days. They are just coming out of the shells, so they aren't making noise or flying into everything... yet. Only a matter of days, no doubt. This land hasn't been disturbed (due to building) for the last two "broods" (34 years) so there are tons of them. Every step one takes in our yard the ground feels spongy due to all of the holes where these buggers are climbing out.

At least, not that I've noticed.

The yard is full of mud tubes with holes in the center. That means they're on their way out of the ground and into our trees. We've had rain the past few days and that makes them move even faster and closer to emergence.

Don't forget -- this is nature's way of naturally aerating the soil; they're perfectly harmless, they're NOT locusts (so forget the Biblical connotation), and it'll all be over in about a month.

Chapel Hill area to be specific...I'm wondering if we'll even get them; most maps I've seen don't quite extend this far into NC...:shrug:



(One can always hope...and pray...and make burnt offerings and sacrifices and bribes...:scared:)

We had a batch five years ago in '99, so we should be due in 12 years. I think the deal is that different places have cicadas that emerge in different years.

Both dead. I guess the cicadas like to hang out in the burbs for some reason. :shrug:

Grand Rapids is right on the boundary of cicada-free zone and a cicada-infested zone.

We may or may not get them.

There are the 17 year ones. I think that there is another brood that comes ever 13? 14? years. All I remember is that in 2000 or so (correct me, Kansas Citians) both flavors arrived at the same time and what a PARTY they had! Outside in the evenings, we had to yell at each other from just a few feet apart in order to be heard. People were out for their evening walk and had earplugs or personal music blaring. I couldn't hear the phone ring/thought it was ringing all the time. We were having gorgeous weather at the time and had the windows closed because we couldn't hear each other talk, couldn't listen to music, couldn't watch T.V., and what I mean to say is they are very very loud. Like people shouting conversation at a noisy bar. Katy-dids, just mate and get it over with and please shut up, y'all look alike anyway.

The trunk on the oak tree in my back yard looked like it was crawling.

In south Dayton, that is. It was crawling up a short brick wall around the patio, looking for a tree I suppose.

What part of town are you in, Jen? I have none in Finneytown, but I've been told that College Hill is (literally) crawling with them. Makes me glad I moved -- at least for now!
