My cicadas have a fungus!

I was reading all about them, they are coming out here -- I read that they get a fungus (that only attacks them, and comes out on the 17 year cycle as well) then I found evidence of it.

I have had a cicada on my porch for two days -- he is only a head (big red eyes) and legs with wings! He has no body -- completely broken off right behind his head. But he lives. This morning a spider had him, but couldn't keep him -- he escaped!

But I was thinking about how sad and ironic it must be to wait 17 years for sexual maturity, go through that whole process of "coming out of your shell" only to have your gentalia fall off!

Damn it.

I can see it now, if Cicadas had TV, there would be this anti-fungus commercial.

One Cicada approaches another in a bar.

"Hey baby, your wings are translucent, and your glowing red eyes set my resonator on FIRE."

Small thud. He looks down. She looks. down.

"Excuse me," she says, "Is that your genetalia on the floor?"

"Wait," he says, bending over quickly, "no, I think it's my cell phone."
He flies off, humiliated.

God, it's complicated to be a cicada.
