Poll question: Spelled or spelt?
If a smelt smelt the same way it smelled when it was spilt on a deck as when it was spilled on a dock, would it be spelt rightly or spelled wrongly when it was spit on a stick?

1. My guess would be which German pronunciation of the ending -t made it
into common English usage....crisp "t" or that "d" sound.

(nerd guess)

2. Spelled = putting letters together to make a word.
Spelt = a grain more nutritious and less likely to cause allergies than wheat.

3. I have no problem with either spelling,
but as an American, I use "spelled." Smelt, spelt, dreamt, spoilt, and the like are fine, good word, just a tad quaint and precious. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Or colour or favour, for that matter. :-)
