When I hit 'Ctrl Alt Delete' once I get a list of 19 items
Is this a bad thing? Should I cut down on the number of items?
And, last but not least, how do I get those items not to load?

3. Is it in
processes or applications?
It depends what the running processes are... often when you end up with a lot of things running, it's spyware/adware... try running adaware. There are a few ways to stop programs from loading. There are a couple of programs out there that can identify what is auto running at startup, and let you stop them from doing so, if you aren't too familiar with doing it manually.

4. try this...
Start>run>msconfig>Startup Items.

Uncheck any that you don't want to load and reboot.

5. Checkout this program
Codestuff Starter

It gives you a list of all running background aps plus a more detailed name for them than Ctrl Alt Delete gives. It also gives you the choice to disable them at startup. Just make sure you don't disable the wrong ones but if you select one and hit properties you can tell if it's needed by Windows.
