Anyone good a dealing with mis-directed stress?
Edited on Sun May-16-04 02:45 PM by HEyHEY
It's just awful, every Sunday I wake up a nervous wreck because production day for the paper is the next day. If I'm at home for the weekend it's even worse...it's really bad, I get up early - there's no sleeping in, and all day I'm tense.

Any suggestions?
Edit: I say mis-directd because there is no reason for me to be worried, I have everything done. SO I think it's something else

1. what I do
I'm a naturally nervous person too but stress and nerves are nervous energy that can be channeled. I have several involving interests that take up my spare time, leaving little opportunity for fretting.

2. I'm pretty sure you won't like this suggestion
strenous exercise. So difficult that you can't think of anything else while you are doing it, and it will tire you out so much you'll get a good nights sleep.

10. It just takes 30 minutes tops
And it's good advice. Much of the discomfort we feel from stress results from the body gearing up for strenuous physical activity ("fight or flight") in which it never engages. 20-30 minutes of intense weights or cardio should bring you back to some measure of tranquility.

4. I'm pretty sure you WILL like this suggestion!
Strenuous drinking of alcohol. You'll stop stressing after a few shots.

8. No sarcasm intended but ..........
do you think you ought to get into a different line of work? If you can't even relax on your off time that ought to tell you soemthing. They way it sounds, if you get lucky enough to reach retirement eligibilty you'll be a physical and mental basket case. Myself, I dropped out of the rat race four years ago at age 56. But I'm fortunate in that I don't have a family to provide for any more. I have a better perspective on life now even if I don't have a regular paycheck coming in.

11. Do something completely unrelated that consumes your mind
Not "busywork" or "busyexercise" that leaves your mind free to obsess on unplesant matters

Some hobby or chore that is sufficiently mentally engaging that you have to really think about what you are doing while doing it. Novels are my escape. I can't read a novel and think about a bunch of other stuff at the same time. Fixing things is another. If I want whatever I'm working on fixed, not messed up even worse, I have to concentrate on it.

13. For starters, declare Sunday as "Your Day." I'm dead serious...
Write it down on a 3x5 card and tape it on the medicine cabinet or refigerator where you'll see it -- "Sunday is My Day."

That means that you're not allowed to work, and worrying about work **is** work. Rather, you get do do something -- anything -- that you want to do: sleep in, take a walk, ride a bike, read, swim, whatever suits you.

Getting out of the house for awhile is probably a good idea -- that will remove you from your everyday situation, where worrying is always easier.

Also, do something nice for yourself on Sundays: take a nap, buy a CD, watch a movie, go to a bookstore, see a movie, etc. Build a reward into the day, and look forward to that.
