What do you do to conserve?
I drive cars that get over 30 mpg's. I turn off the lights when I leave a room.

I waste water watering my lawn, but I wait until it is late in the day to reduce evaporation.

We should all begin to pee in our yards! Think of the savings!

I drive only as necessary
I stock up when I can during sales at the grocery store
I do laundry/dishes only when I have full loads

6. My old Geo Prizm
gets around 35 mph. I use a composting toilet, and I don't have a lawn to water (helps living out in the country). I plant heirloom plants so I can save seeds. I try to shop at local stores to help local businesspeople who I know are doing things like using passive solar energy. My husband is planning for us to go solar/wind soon, and he has plans for making a hybrid car.

7. I don't have a car or a lawn
I turn out lights I'm not using. I use single-ply. I only use the air conditioner in unbearable, health-risking heat. In the winter I keep my heat at 60-63 and wear a sweater.

8. hang laundry to dry
saves a lot on electric, less ironing and less shrinkage.

after making a pot of coffee, put it in a carafe...so I can unplug machine.

lots more.... :)

use dish towels instead of papertowels for most things

turn dishwasher (when I had one....don't have one here) on air dry

use flourescent lights in halls and outdoors

Probably could go on forever. :)

Edited on Sun May-16-04 06:03 PM by Township75
recycle, ride my bike or take the bus to anyplace I need to go whenever I can, try to minimize my use of water and electricity, and I don't buy too much that I don't need, and I buy recycled products whenever possible.

13. I almost never turn on the bathroom light
Edited on Sun May-16-04 06:26 PM by dolo amber
Unless I need to look in the mirror for some reason...otherwise, why bother? I'm pretty familiar with where everything is...;) :D

I also used to save the bags out of cereal boxes to reuse as storage/freezer bags and other such things, but lately I've sort of gotten out of the habit. Thanks for the reminder. :)

edit: Duh, we compost and recycle also. Dunno why I forgot that! :silly:

14. I have a garden
Also, a compost pile. I buy my eggs from local farmers, too. One of the best subversive thing you can do is to grow your own food and buy locally. That's all food that's not raised by agribusiness and transported crosscountry by gas-guzzling trucks. We have some really great lettuce, radishes, and green onions right now and a lot of other veggies coming along.

Oh, and I drive a fuel-efficient car, recycle, and use those new florescent bulbs.

18. Good stuff!
I was going to plant a garden, but got a little lazy. I still have the rototiller out there, but I don't know. I tell myself I should save the seeds for when I REALLY need them. Is that paranoia or a cop out? Probably both!

I did get a good batch of grass growing after rototilling. Maybe I should get a goat so I don't have to go down and buy $2.30 gas to run the mower?

20. I use compact fluorescent light bulbs
an ultra low-flow shower head

an "energy buster" on my fridge

wrapped my hot water heater with extra insulation

use my dishwasher (full loads - it really does save energy and water)

use the ceiling fan all seasons

bike to work - walk to the grocery store

recycle all cans and bottles

primarily vegetarian diet

(yeah, I fall off the wagon every once in a while for fresh grilled homemade fajitas - mmmmm)

22. I also drive good-mileage cars
I don't water the lawn at all unless there's new seed, nor do I use chemical fertilizers or pesticides. (I've actually heard that not spraying your lawn can keep squirrels and rabbits out of your vegetable garden, because they actually like dandelions and clover better than tomatoes -- it makes sense, and we lose little to animals).

I'll also be installing a new high-efficiency, Energy Star furnace, though not by choice (those of you in the Lounge Friday night heard about its untimely death) :eyes:. We do use a set-back thermostat on both that and thea/c. (Hey! This week we're not heating or cooling at all! Talk about conservation...)
