Humvee Pinkie Salute; why do they get so mad?
Edited on Mon May-17-04 11:13 AM by joefree1

What's so insulting about this?

My wife first saw some of her friends giving a pinkie salute to a Humvee last year. Since then we salute every Hummer we see. Pass it on.

Edit: whoops, my wife tells me she started it. People magazine will want to know.

2. I have been flashing the "L"
sign, but I like the little pinky a whole lot more :-)

If they lived in a place where they needed the traction, I wouldn;t be so upset. I know folks high up off the grid in the Sierras, and I have no problem with their owning a Hummer. Theirs is completely filthy on the outside (yes, real mud!), and they recycle their oil, etc. The folks who live down here in the SF Bay Area, though, have no reason to own an offroader as a commuter vehicle, and it pisses me off that their heavy vehicle is accelerating the aging of our roads.

3. Here in LA we always see the super clean ones
Either gleeming Black or bright yellow. Ya think they start traveling in convoys for protection?

4. They'd better!
I love that image, by the way... It would be a great poster if you juxtaposed that with the photo-op of Arnie at his "hydrogen highway" press thing a few weeks ago.

5. I never understood the desire
to go out in the world and publicly pass judgment on strangers.

I hate Humvees. I think they're gross. But it's somebody else's choice. I don't have to like it or agree with it, but does that entitle me to insult them?

When I had a rainbow sticker on my car, I was repeatedly insulted, or even worse, told I was being "prayed for" (which is just an insult that doesn't invite a punch in the nose).

None of us makes lifestyle choices that are liked by everyone.

Throwing blood on fur wearers, attacking women going into Planned Parenthood, insulting Humvee drivers.... all different sides of the same instinct to demonstrate one's moral superiority to others. It's ugly on all sides.

6. Driving a 10 miles-to-the-gallon vanity/gas hog?
In light of the current environmental and terrorist-oil blight more certainly merits our protest and disgust.

Equating our protest with attacking woman at Planned Parenthood is disgusting as well.

11. Well, you're easily disgusted
and you missed the point. I'm not equating the actions. I'm discussing the general idea that we SHOULD insult strangers who make decisions we disagree with.

I don't think that's necessarily true, because I've been on the OTHER side of that equation many times. I was a clinic escort at three abortion clinics for a number of years. I've had rainbow stickers and other gay-identifying stickers on my car. In those instances, I was insulted repeatedly by strangers who felt they were in a position to judge MY life. I don't think it's the right thing to do.

The simple fact is, EVERYBODY thinks they're right. If you adopt the view that you can insult others for their decisions, then you grant them the same position.

How about we all just stop attacking strangers?

7. Often we agree on this issue but I make an exception for humvees
I think if one wants to parade around in a military assault vehicle, they should do so for free in Iraq.

Call me a judgemental bitch...see if I care :D

9. well, judgmental bitch...
you make some good points... :P

I know, I know. I really hate them, too.

But I realized awhile ago that my dislike for something doesn't give me the right to insult strangers. The SAME exact argument is used to insult ME because of a rainbow sticker. They can argue, badly, that homosexuality is somehow bad for society. Doesn't matter if they're right - they believe it. Does their deeply-held belief give them the right to insult me? They know NOTHING about me other than I have a rainbow sticker.

A woman going into an abortion clinic is subject to attack by strangers, on the basis of ONE fact. The attackers sincerely believe that abortion is bad for society. Are they therefore entitled to attack her? (Not do they have the right to insult here... they do. But is it right?)

16. Insult (your words) or poke fun at (my words)
What ever you call it still is a long way from "attack by strangers" on strangers.

"Attack" is a pretty strong word. However I would use it when describing what at Humvee driver does to us and the environment when they drive this incredibly stupid vehicle in defiance of all reason except vanity.

Some people just deserve to have a pinkie finger wagged at them. So arrest me. I will continue to abuse my rights as an American while making fun of the intolerant and the tyrannical.

They got money and power. All we got is talent, humor, and the numbers.

17. I never said
you should be arrested.

My position is that we should all be a little more humble about our moral superiority. Insulting/attacking/belitting strangers is a poor way to convince anybody of your point of view.

You have picked one very obvious example where a lot of people would agree with you, but the principle behind it (that it's OK to insult strangers because of their lifestyle choices) is a very slippery slope. Should strangers accost you at the supermarket if you buy meat, and they think it's immoral? Should strangers accost you for driving ANYTHING other than an electric car? How pure is pure enough?

18. That slope slides both ways
Should you accost someone for beating their dog? Shooting a wild animal? Dumping trash in nature? Poisoning our streams. How bad is bad enough?

Screw humble, we need to make people feel stupid for driving that stupid vehicle.

Hey you want bad by the way, check out the Hummer salutes submitted to this site. Whoa!

19. I believe,
as would most people, that we should intervene when we see an atrocity, like beating a child or dog, or something illegal, like dumping trash or poisoning streams.

But as for legal activities, where do you draw the line? What is the average mileage a vehicle needs before you feel free to accost the owner? Should we flip off Hummers, spit at pickup trucks but just sneer at sports cars?

It just seems we have ugliness and judgment in our culture, most of it coming from the other side. I don't think we should be like them.

20. Cool. That means that we motorcyclists get to flip off just about every
other motorized vehicle.

Actually, we have cause, more often than not, thanks to car drivers' (aka 'cagers') various deliberate and non-deliberate attempts to kill us.

I agree with you. I find Hummers a disgusting presence on our roads but I haven't 'attacked' them in any way. I think bad thoughts about the drivers and the mindset that has led to the ascendency of superfluous Suburban Assault Vehicles, as I do all oversized conveyances that are obviously (e.g., a nice, shiny, pristine 4WD monstrosity in the wilds of Beverly Hills that has never even seen a gravel road) gratuitous. These things are dangerous, contribute to a neglectful -- and sometimes downright aggressive -- state of mind that's even more dangerous, and they're supremely wasteful. They embody the less noble side of the collective American character. All this, of course, not applicable to people who could actually use a large SUV, a number that is patently a tiny minority of the people who actually own them.

I would, however, perhaps be more disposed to rudeness should one of these behemoths endanger my life (forget 'should,' because they already have and so far my response has been to accelerate away from the aggressive/inattentive mofos). That, of course, becomes confounded with the greater likelihood that drivers of these things would be more likely to threaten my existence in the first place.

I'd protest 'em, treat with disdain those who buy them for totally superfluous reaosn, and avoid them on the road, but I wouldn't go out of my way to provoke them in traffic. I think. Then again, I have been thinking about taping a "Buy a Hummer, kill a soldier" sign to the back of my leather jacket: that's silent protest, but I suspect that the political leanings of most urban Hummer owners would make me a target...the good thing is that a motorcycle's far more nimble in LA traffic than are those monsters.

22. You walk a fine line
People beat their kids or animals quite legally everyday. Tossing trash in is legal in too many areas. People poison streams and oceans when they wash their cars. Bloated SUVs that never leave a city street become the fashion of the day.

Only when public opinion swells against a disreputable act does our government finally work to change laws. Not the other way around. Ridicule of what was once an accepted fashion help to change this.

I draw the line when some jerk drives a 10 mile a gallon penis extension posing as transportation. We choose to ridicule it and the driver because they're the most extreme example of contempt for the environment.

Ridicule is one of the last rights you loose in a tyranny. Right before whining.

Being nice while the right wing-nuts push us around is what got us in our current situation anyway.

I'm all for getting ugly when it's merited.

What? you don't own one?

Could have fooled me.
You're starting to sound like you have one behind your house and you're feeling guilty for buying it.

Thou doth protesteth too damn much.
