I've never heard of a "snakehead" fish. Have you?

This photo, taken from the Maryland Department of National Resources (MDDNR) website shows the airbreathing, landwalking snakehead fish. A man in Los Angeles was arrested for allegedly selling a live snakehead fish.(AFP/HO-MDDNR/File)

Apparently, one was caught over the weekend in the Potomac River.

2. Don't you remember last year?
They had to poison and/or drain a couple of ponds to get rid of them. They're nasty critters - they can "walk" from one pond to another.

18. Yup--it was a pretty big story.
They naively thought that it was contained to one small Maryland pond. If only... :-(

3. Bad news for native fish
The snakeheads are yet another invasive species. These guys will eat up all the natives from your pond and then walk on over to feast at the neighbors'.

9. Why It Walks
It walks because it doesn't have change for the farebox.

5. The Daily Show did a hysterical bit on the snake head last year
Saying they were bringing in paranas to get rid of the snakeheads, then I forget what to get rid of the paranas, and so on and so until they decided they had to use nepalm to get rid of everything.

Ok, it doesn't sound that funny, but it was.

8. Many Asian countries consider them to be very tasty.
I remember a story about how in Korea (?) they found our problem with the growing snakehead population to be quite amusing. "Why don't they just eat them, like we do?"

16. That's how they got here to begin with
You could mail-order these fishies to be overnighted from Asia, live. (They can live out of water for a certain time period.) Apparently some guy decided on something else for dinner and dumped one in a creek, where it proceeded to eat the other, native residents.

They've found a couple in the Potomac and its tributaries, which is a shitload of a problem if they've bred. Kiss those crabcakes goodbye.
