Check out the bass-alto sax "conversation" between Mingus and Eric Dolphy on "What Love" from the "Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus" album.

IMHO, Mingus is even more important as a bandleader and composer than he is as a bass player.

Saxophones:

Tenor - Coltrane, Lester Young

Soprano - Coltrane

Alto - Bird

Baritone - Pepper Adams

Bass: Mingus

Guitar: Django Reinhardt

Organ: Jimmy Smith

And I probably left out a few instruments, but...oh well...

I could listen to his solo recordings all night, both his own compositions and his delightfully twisted takes on pop standards. Monk's style reminds me of a Tom Waits song: "The Piano's Been Drinking, Not Me."

I'm also fond of Fats Waller, Bill Evans and an underrated pianist who died much too young a few years ago, Don Pullen. Check out the recordings he did as a Mingus sideman, "Changes One" and "Changes Two," as well as those by the band he co-led with fellow Mingus alumni George Adams and by his own Afro-Brazilian Connection.

You'd probably have to be from Tulsa or have spent some time here to know who he is, but if you ever hear him play............

75. Let's add percussion (includes vibes-- not a keyboard instrument, y'all)
I gotta go with Lionel Hampton, a stone magician, though I love Milt Jackson as well.

For percussion more generally, Harvey Mason, as immortalized at the end of George Benson's "On Broadway": HARVEY MASON! AND RALPH MCDONALD!

Also serves as a kick for late-evening DUers...

89. Clarinet
I go with Benny Goodman. Won't argue with the earlier nomination of Sidney Bechet either, though.

99. What does John Tesh play?
Cause he's the best at whatever it is that he plays!

Same with Kenny G. He is also the best at whatever it is that he plays.

I like Slash a lot too.

Warm Regards,
Matt
