An elderly parishioner lost control of his car in the parking lot of a church in Linden yesterday, nearly crushing an infant in a stroller before running over and critically injuring two women leaving a Communion service.
In all, four adults and five children were injured in the chaotic chain of events that began when 72-year-old Andrew Pachana backed his Chevrolet Caprice station wagon from a handicapped parking space at St. Theresa's Church just after 4 p.m., police and witnesses said.
The car reversed about 30 feet, stopping near the church cafeteria after knocking over a 9-year-old girl who was pushing her 2-month-old brother in a stroller and two other boys, brothers ages 11 and 6, police said.
The car then lurched forward, picking up speed, hitting another 9-year-old girl, a 21-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man as it raced about 80 feet across a parking lot. The car went airborne after hitting a hedgerow near the front of the church.
