Linux 2.6 Kernel Users: Want a Killer Tweak?
I did this here, and my system is SOOOOO much faster it's almost scary. Try it. It's easy and you may just beshat yourself with the apparent speed gains of your system. Note: This is not some dangerous hack.

Su/sudo to root in a terminal.

Open the file /etc/modprobe.conf in a text editor.

Append this line to the bottom of modprobe.conf:

alias net-pf-10 off

Save.

Reboot the system.

What this does is prevent the kernel from loading/activating the IPv6 module. Without this module loaded, the system is no longer whacking DNSs for IPv6 domain resolutions, which, when left unanswered or ignored, by IPv4 DNSs, can really slow things down.

I did this here. Web pages explode into Konqueror. All net functions have far reduced latencies. The system boots much faster and KDE loads incredibly faster.

It works and I shit you not. It will not put your system at risk.

I *think* it might work with earlier kernel versions, but I am not sure. I would google it first.

1. Whoa, dude
I'll try that later in my Tao workstation. Good tip for people who don't compile their own kernels.

2. you *should* be able to do this without reboot
if ip6 is a module, and net-pf-10 is it's name (not on a linux machine right now, so I can't check), you should be able to do
# rmmod net-pf-10
at a root propt (or even better, sudo). and you should not have to reboot

keep in mind that the key word in this post is *should*

5. I turned IPv6 off on my Mac OS X box
I'll see if I get a similar improvment.

(for the curious, Apple Meny -> System Prefs -> Network. Select the ethernet adaptor (or dsl, whatever you have) hit Configure button. In the TCP/IP tab (1st one) click the Configure IPv6 button. Then select OFF from the dropdown.
