Poll question: Heterosexual DUers: How many gay people do you know?
For the purpose of this poll, I'll define "know" as acquentince or better (family counts). Someone you'd feel perfectly confortable calling up and hanging out with (as opposed a friend of a friend, or some dude at work that you hardly ever talk to)

I'm guessing that homosexual DUers will have more gay friends than the heteros, so I gave you guys choice #1

4. I honestly don't know.
It's not the kind of thing that I ask or care about. I know of at least a few that have said they are gay. But I have no idea how many and won't even bother to try counting. What's the point? They seem just like "regular" people to me.

It doesn't matter to me either, actually, I see it as a plus to know about
it, just because it means that my friend is close enough to me to want to talk about relationships and things. The first time each friend casually mentioned his/her date or bf/gf, or whatever was kind of a step into a closer friendship for me. Now, as far as business/professional relationships, I don't need to know, and it doesn't matter one bit.

7. Not as many as I used to...
Up until I moved to Dallas, I had at least one very good gay friend since at least my Freshman year in high school.

Haven't really made any gay friends in Dallas.

9. Welcome to DU
:hi:

I don't know how many GLBT people I know. I do know that the company I work for is very GLBT-friendly, so people are quite open about their sexual orientation. It ticks the freepers at the company off royally. :)

12. I voted 8+, becaue I counted several GLBT DUers whom I would TOTALLY...
...call up and hang out with.

Otherwise, somewhere in the 5-7 range (it's open, owing to the sometimes fluid nature of sexuality).

13. One of my brothers is gay, and my best female friend
is a lesbian. So, I guess the answer is two.

I'm casually acquainted with many other gay and lesbian folks.

Now that I'm thinking about it, some of my very favorite posters on DU are gay/lesbian as well. Hmmm...

16. I knew one...
I did volunteer work in a teen drama group that focused on prevention of the spread of AIDS, other STDs, and teen pregnancy. About a year after I left the group, he was brutally murdered in a hotel room in Green Bay. Both of his killers are now serving life sentences.

17. I stopped paying attention...

Of my close circle of friends from high school, three are gay, and one is bisexual. Since we remained close through most of our early 20's, I got to know a lot of their gay friends, many of whom I still know today.

My two closest friends are both gay, as are their SO's naturally, and most of their other friends. In fact, when I socialize, I tend to be a minority, which kinda plays hell with my own dating prospects. :-)

So, it's definitely 8+.

19. I'm (mostly) straight
and I have so many LGBT friends it would skew the poll. What I don't have is very many straight vanilla friends. I mean, come on, I sing with the Seattle Lesbian and Gay Chorus, and I just got back from an interesting retreat weekend with the chorus. There was pretty much every point on the Kinsey scales of orientation and gender identity represented (and several of us moved back and forth on the scales all weekend!).

21. I voted 5, but forgot several friends.
I'm tired I guess.

Twenty years ago, I had the experience once of dating a Lesbian who was giving heterosexuality a whirl. I knew all of her friends, and the lover who eventually won her back. In those days I could have claimed 10+, but we've long been out of touch.

Edited on Mon May-17-04 09:41 PM by SW FL Dem
At this time in my life, I have to say none. My son has had 2 gay male teachers. I wouldn't call them up or hang out with them, but that has nothing to do with them being gay. When I was in college, I had more than 8 openly gay friends. My sister's best friend growing up (kindergarten through college) was gay. Unfortunately, he lost his battle with AIDS in 1996 but his legacy lives on, my sister named her first born after him.

I love hanging out with intelligent, witty people. Sexuality is not an issue.

31. Over the years, scads
From high school till now, I figure there have been more than 25. Some have been my closest friends. Some have drifted out of my life. Some died of AIDS and other illnesses. Some I worked with; one I worked for. One moved to Alaska to become a hermit.

Currently, one is working hard to get me a job at his company, and six more are the best neighbors in my building.

About 20 years of mixing with theatrical people (amateur & pro) plus
quite a few long term friends & family of friends adds up to a lot more
than 8!

(FWIW, both me and Mrs.Nihil are straight, just fairly open-minded :-) )
