Can anyone tell me what this "Gas Out" is?
I went and got tires for my truck a couple of hours ago and the story from and retired marine there was that on Wednesday we are going to have a nationwide "Gas Out" strike. No one buys gas that day. I think this is a good idea. Anyone else?

I can't find any information anywhere. Can anyone find a link to it somewhere maybe?

Thanks

3. Has it ever really been tried? Or did everyone just say they did?
Just curious why it won't help?

5. OK. Think about it.
One day of no gas will not do anything. Everyone would just buy the same amount the prior or following day. In order for something like that to work, it would require a much longer boycott, resulting in huge damage to the entire economy that relies on transportation of goods. No food in the grocery store, nobody going to work, etc...

4. You're right
They never work, simply because they just make up for it the next day. Face it, we all need gas and we have to get it eventually. The only boycotts that come close to working are boycotts of individual oil companies. Now if everyone boycotted Shell for a month or two, that would produce results and actually do damage to that company. The idea behind the gas out sounds great in theory, but the reality is that we'll all have to buy gas the next day, or the day after that.

6. There's a better solution:
No matter what the temptation is, buy NOTHING, especially if it's mainstream stuff that sells more.

Drive ONLY as needed. No special trips. Do grocery shopping on your way home from work.

Cancel cable/satellite service. People will need to, it's expensive as it is.

If you have children, tell 'em to grow up or ride a bike. This involves THEIR future as well. Big-time. We are doing it for them as well.

A concerted effort (made easier thanks to rising gas and food prices) will not bode well for the economy. But none of us needs to organize at all. The rising prices on the pure necessities is doing everything. People WILL be driving less. Be buying less. Finding other ways to deal with things. corporate america may have shot itself in its own foot (and leg) thanks to its own greed (in corporate america, they're all guilty. We are nothing more than walking wallets to them.) And while I will shed tears for regular Americans, I have nary a tear of sympathy for those who have brought about this country's economic collapse: Coporate interests and the politicians who support them. For they have forgotten PEOPLE in the process.

I am not an enemy, I'm just saying what will likely happen. Newspaper articles have said more controversial comments.

I'd love to spend more, there's a lot of cool things in this world. But those in power want things both ways (as the CEO of the Timkin manufacturing plant in Ohio will ultimately realize... * was there a year ago, they both shoveled shit to the media and idiots about AMerica's industry and manufacturing and workers being the core of the economy and then turned on them.)

7. Actually, there was a story a few days ago
A couple guys in Washington want to make Thursdays no-buy-gas days. But I agree with the others in this thread: It's a pointless exercise. It may make some people feel like they're 'sticking it to the Man,' but nothing more.

8. Ah, yes,
"sticking it to the man"......brings back fond memories of the good old days when I thought Nixon was the worst evil the US would ever face.

11. So, what if the gas station is owned by a local businessperson?
We're wanting to hurt them, too?

I think the sentiment is a good one, but the execution is a bit off.
