Albums with a theme.......

In the '60s and early '70s many
bands recorded concept albums...
for example - SgtPepper's Lonely
Hearts Club Band" by the Beatles.

Which was your favorite concept
album?

I would have to go with Sgt Pepper
although "Tommy" by the Who is a
close second.

:-)

I'm partial to Animals, but I love 'em all...

even The Final Cut, which was more of a Roger Waters solo album than a true Pink Floyd album...

25. Maybe not a concept album but I think it was
the first album that had songs that
told a story. It was certainly a
breakthrough album and after its
release many bands tried to do
the same thing.

29. TLLDOB is THE concept album
Maybe it's BEYOND concept. It's hard to believe it's been 30 years since I those disks first hit my turntable. I have it on CD now, and it STILL blows me away. Peter Gabriel was on to something huge and perverse in his narrative, and the whole band was thriving in his universe. I refer those who dis Phil Collins to TLLDOB to listen to his drumming (ask any drummer, Phil is a fucking monster on the skins).

Eh, maybe I'll go listen to it now, with the LIGHTS OFF....

39. They claim it was the first rock opera.
I interviewed them and went to see them when they had a 'come back' in the early nineties. The publicist sent me their entire catalog on CDs, and to be honest with you, that was my least favorite of their albums. BTW, isn't it S.F. Sorrow? (I'm not sure how well my memory is doing on this one, but I think that's what it is.)

34. "Doug" by the Coolies
A late '80s rock opera by this wiseguy band from San Diego tells the story of a punk rocker (Doug) who kills a chef, and sells the chef's recipe book as his own. It's an amazingly well done song cycle story -- makes a whole lot more sense than "Tommy." Along the way, they send up various other rock operas and styles. It also came with a comic book libretto that illustrated everything. Tremendous, but kind of hard to find now.

41. I can't believe nobody mentioned "Desperado"
Edited on Mon May-17-04 11:35 PM by TheWizardOfMudd
Yes, I'm sick of the title song, too.

But the album is a chronological story following the careers of old-west, American outlaws and likening them/showing the similarities to the lives of rock stars in the 60's and 70's (as you-know-who, the ones who died).

If you never listened to the entire album and weren't following music at the time (1972-73, I think), you've probably only heard the two hits, "Desperado" and "Tequila Sunrise."

BUT if you ever get the chance to imbibe your favorite vice, sit down and listen to the whole thing and follow the story, chances are you will feel like you just watched a great movie.

The last friend I loaned the disc to did that and said he teared up at the end.

It is a great concept album. One of the best.

The side with her drowning at sea. Many songs about her state of mind as she struggles to stay alive. The best one is "Waking the Witch" where she imagines she is a Salem witch thrown into the water to see if she can swim.

just a collection of songs. It did have a theme
and is considered a ground-breaking album. Many
bands tried this same "concept" too.
