Mother Has To Write Research Paper For Allowing Underage Drinking
<snip>

A Fishers mother must serve at least two days in jail and write a 20-page research paper as part of a sentence imposed today in connection with an underage drinking party at her home last year.

Hamilton Superior Court 5 Judge Wayne A. Sturtevant sentenced Eileen Barbour to a year in Hamilton County Jail, then suspended all but four days of the sentence.

With credit for good behavior, Barbour, 48, would serve two days behind bars.

"It's a fair sentence," said Deputy Prosecutor Matthew Gernand. "Underage drinking is a large problem. It becomes a larger problem when you have parents starting to condone that activity, and then providing alcohol for the minors.

"I think the sentence serves as a good message to the community that parents should not be hosting parties and allowing their kids to drink."

1. Hmm, she should write the paper on...
"allowing underage drinking." Just like the title says.

God knows there's plenty of good reason to.

2. maybe we wouldn't have such a large drug problem
with teens if they could go have a beer when they wanted too. we obviously learned nothing from prohibition. in most of europe there is a much more relaxed mood towards alcohol. I was raised in the UK and recall going into pubs with friends from the time I was 16 or 17. it was no problem as long as you weren't rowdy. if you were then you got kicked out. no problem..

3. And my relatives let me have wine with dinner and a mixed drink
before beginning when I was about 14.

How could I rebel by drinking when drinking was something I could do in front of my grandmother and my great uncles and great aunts?

After a little experimentation in college, when I learned that over-indulging isn't worth the hangover, I've been a two-drink per day max type person.l

4. That's pretty damn funny
The judge gave the same kind of punishment that a high school kid would get, writing a research paper and a two day suspension from life. There's something ironic and silly about that.

5. She should do some research comparing
alcoholism rates etc. in European countries where kids _can_ drink as older teenagers, and do so even earlier in family settings.

Course I have a feeling that's not what the judge wants. She might get a bigger sentence for contempt of court. But that'd be a good case for a civil liberties lawyer to fight.
