Getting rid of boring people.
Any tips?

He came by for me to witness his signature on a paper.
I can't call him a friend, because you usually like to hang out with friends.
He is THE most boring person I know.
I do everything I can to avoid being in a one-on-one situation with him.

He likes cars, and so he tells me about his. Ad nauseum, ad infinitum.
He sat at my dining room table and verbally completely disassembled and reassembled the engine.

I began to yawn and rub my eyes.
He moved on to the 5 speed SynChroMesh whooptydoo transmission...or something.
I prayed for the phone to ring. I would have talked to a telemarketer like a long lost friend and bought whatever he was selling.
No such luck. Where are they when you really need one?

Then he told me about a movie he had that I might like. Something about auto racing. Actually it's 5 videotapes. Oh God.
"Fine, I'll borrow it sometime."
"Oh I'll bring it over with a six-pack and we can watch it together."
"Well, I'm not actually that interested in auto racing."
Backpedal, backpedal, backpedal.

I guess he needs a friend, but I just can NOT take this.
I don't want to hurt his feelings.
Any suggestions for a tactful way out of this?
Thanks.

1. A Permanent Solution Would Likely Hurt His Feelings...
... your best best is to always have a phone call that you need to be making.

"Sorry, Jim... I can't talk now, I need to return a phone call. I see you later, okay."

6. Miz t. said "just getting ready to leave".
That'd work.
"Jeez Tom, I gotta jump in the shower and be out of here in half an hour."

2. That
Seems to be quite a problem here in baldwin county. We had to get rid of several friends that were like that. There really is no easy way to kick em to the curb you just gotta weigh what you want verses what they want. 9 out of 10 times here they are users.

3. If it were me, I would just be honest and tell the guy
that I know absolutely nothing about cars and have no intention of learning. That's what we pay mechanics for. It might hurt his feelings, but so what? You don't really like him anyway. :-)

4. You could always plead recurring bouts of
intestinal discomfort, and ask him to excuse you. Go to the bathroom and stay in there for a few hours.

Not very delicate, but it could work!

5. Hey, the Whooptydoo transmission was great!
Seriously, why does this guy hang around you? It's probably because you're giving him cues that you're interested. Maybe it's the way you look at him.

If not, you might be in trouble. I knew a guy once who loved to talk cameras. Would expound for hours on the latest lenses, film or whatever. But one day I shut him up by asking to see any actual photos. He never took any. Nothing interesting anyways. Just Aunt Mabel at Christmas.

Then I started to talk about great photographers such as Ansel Adams, George Weston, etc. He lost interest with ME.

Don't know if you could do the same, though. You can always make excuses, make yourself unavailable. Eventually, he'll give up.

7. I think he needs a friend.
And I kinda feel like a shit for not being one to him.
But GODDAMIT he is the MOST boring guy I've ever met.
Life (at 62) is getting too short.
I'm OK at a party where he's there. You can drift off and talk to someone else.
Funny about the photog guy.
That's what he does.
He's also a Democrat. I hope he doesn't hang out here.

9. There's nothing you can do except cut him out of your life entirely.
Compulsive talkers don't take hints, and they don't care if you're interested in the subject they're nattering on about. They love the sounds of their own voices and are completely oblivious to everything else. You could hang yourself from your tie right in front of him and he wouldn't notice. So, unless you're willing to put up with the monologues, you have to dump him. But don't worry. You won't be the first, or the last.

10. You live in Alabama, right?
Tell him you are secretly gay and the attraction you feel for him is too distracting to bear.

It will either drive him away or make the relationship a lot less boring!

(Sorry, I just couldn't think of a good serious solution.)
