I told a customer off about child labor/outsourcing
Edited on Mon May-17-04 07:01 PM by AlienGirl
I was working and this tall, tanned man came up to ask me about kids' watches. He was dressed expensively and looked like he had money to keep up a gym membership.

In a tone that suggested he expected me to be impressed, he started telling me about his "great new invention"--a child's safety watch that has an alarm on it. All he wanted, he said, was a cheap kids' watch to send to China as a prototype for the manufacturer.

"You're making them in China?" I asked.

"Yeah, but they're developed and engineered here in America," he replied.

"Watches for kids, made by kids," I blurted.

Mr. Entrepreneur launched into a hasty explanation about how his manufacturer "works with the whole family," how "it's a different culture there," and how "if the kids didn't work their families would starve."

I hope I at least gave him food for thought...

Tucker

1. Rationalization.
So he admits it. How would he like it if HIS kids had to work and not go to school.

2. It used to be a different culture here too
Until we started caring about kids and passed laws against it.

4. Not just child labor, but prisoners, too
Yep, a different culture, that's for sure.

5. I don't think prison-labor would have made an impact
This guy had the attitude where he'd probably think, "They're in prison for dong something wrong, might s well put their time to use" or similar crap.
