Poll question: Would You Be Ok with A English Woman As Your President?
Edited on Tue May-18-04 09:48 AM by lionesspriyanka
Assuming you are American and George w. Bush was the alternative and it wasnt Unconstitutional. The English Woman would be JUST as corrupt as Dubya but not pandering to the Religious Right.

28. Thatcher
as bad as Thatcher was she'd still be preferable to Dumbass Dubya. She at least has a brain and wouldn't be deluded by the PNAC loonies and she is not a religious fanatic and wouldn't pander to them. So as terrible as she would be as a President I would even pick Maggie over Emperor Sock Puppet in a heartbeat.

3. If it was constitutionally possible, sure, but
I'm just wondering what the reasoning behind this question is. ??

10. I think
it has to do with this.

Sonia Gandhi, who led her Congress party to a surprise victory in India's elections, said she won't take the post of prime minister. That may assuage anger that a foreign-born person would lead the world's second-most populous nation.

11. it's the india thing
Gandhi was born in Italy or something, not India. I'm not too up to date on it but the alternative was to have the entire country privatized from the sound of it.

6. I'm ABB all the way...
The Whistleass makes even the awful Margaret Thatcher look good. Anyway, if you stop and think about it, a corrupt outsider is always better than a corrupt insider, because the outsider will be hit with obstacles every step of the way.

20. I would be OK with the English president
It is almost a no win situation you propose, with both sides corrupt. The swing for me is one is religious right, the other is not. If nothing else, at least I wouldn't have someone trying to force their religious beliefs on me.

30. I'd rather have a Mozambican/Portuguese woman as my first lady!
Teresa Heinz Kerry, obviously.

Clearly your unnamed English woman is a stand-in for Sonia Gandhi, who will NOT accept the PM position in India and has thrown her support behind a finance minister (?) who is Sikh, a nice in-your-face to the hardcore Hindu nationalists who carped incessantly over her Italian origins.

No Italian woman has ever been PM in Italy. Kind of a shame it couldn't happen, in a way...

32. Her Italian birth may not be the reason Sonia Gandhi declined.
I've read that she's _not_ a "natural" politician, but led and campaigned for the Congress Party more out of a sense of obligation rather than wanting to be PM.

Also, given the family's sad history of assassinations, she might feel it would happen again. Like Ted Kennedy recused himself from further presidential runs.
