Itt's me again, seeking suggestions for pop-up killers.
Thanks to the generosity of fellow DUers I was able to upgrade my internet security this weekend. However, I have been invaded, like cicadas, by pop-up ads. What's a good ad-killer, and are there any free or inexpensive ones out there? Thanks.

1. I use StopZilla.
You have to pay for it, but it's well worth the price! I haven't had a single pop-up on my screen since I downloaded StopZilla software. Plus, you get regular updates free of charge.

4. I saw that last night,
but I was wavering about the price. (I am on a fixed income.) Still, if it is indeed worth the $19.95, I am game. Thanks.

2. After The Google Hoo-Rah Today
Edited on Tue May-18-04 07:03 PM by Don_G
I did a little research and found a tool bar that does just that. No pop-up or pop-under ads so far, capable of searching 12 news sites and 64 different search engines.

Customizable and free: http://www.advancedsearchbar.com/

On edit: It also locks your Homepage so it won't be hijacked.

5. You should also have a program to remove spamware.
Sybot Search and Destroy will remove this crap from your machine.

14. I do have Search and Destroy.
However, there is one website I visit frequently: moregehrig.tripod.com. Since Sunday night, though, every time I go there, I get hit with pop-ups. I don't have this problem anywhere else I have been the last couple of days. Is there something I am missing here? Thanks.

8. I second this motion!
If you do get stuck using Internet Explorer I found the Google Toolbar to work about as well as anything.

But just get Firefox. It really is a superior browser.

7. Use Mozilla Browser
The pop-up stopper is built in and you can kill banner ads also (except the nifty one at the top of DU of course!).

11. It's that simple
You don't want pop-ups? Don't download crap. Get Mozilla. Any Mozilla.

Turn on the pop up stopper, if you want a site to be allowed to (bank transactions, etc.) all you have to do is enter its URL. It really is that simple. I haven't seen popups for years. Seems that way at least.

I sent a link for my brother to read. He said he was never going back because of the unbelievable number of popups that made the site ugly. I said, "what popups?" I hadn't seen, or been slowed down by, a single one.

9. MOZILLA!
Jesus, people. IE is CRAP. IE 7 will have built-in pop-up blocking (finally, only 2 or 3 years behind the competition), but until then, you're better off using the Mozilla browser (either the full version or Firefox). Built-in pop-up blocking, which you can selectively control so you get po;p-ups you WANT to get; and an add-on called BannerBlind that eliminates banner ads. It's worth the minute or two it takes to download on a broadband connection. Trust me.

12. Even after IE 7, you are better off with something else
IE is crap. Pure and simple crap. It is ugly, dysfunctional and slow as a rock.

Take the plunge. Download another browser. You won't be sorry. It may take you awhile to configure to your liking, but it will be well worth it. I see people using IE and cringe. I see IE and wonder why. Popular means good? Go watch American Idol and use IE. (not talking to you in particular, just getting off on a good rant).

IE is satan's browser.

15. Everyone:
Edited on Tue May-18-04 08:10 PM by playahata1
First, excuse me if I sound as if I don't know what I am talking about when it comes to computers. I am not as computer-literate as I need to be, but I am learning as much as I can as I go along.

Anyway, I re-read the adware/spware section of the tutorial for the program I am using, compared what is happening pop-up-wise at the one website I had mentioned with what is happening at other sites I frequent. I have concluded that it is the one website with the pop-ups that is giving me problems, and that Search and Destroy is doing the job everywhere else. Is that par for the course with this particular ad-blocker?

Again, I am open to ALL suggestions, as quite a few of you who have responded so far are singing the praises of MOZILLA. And once again, thanks for your help. Peace.

16. One Program Can't Do It All
Edited on Tue May-18-04 08:58 PM by Don_G
And there are about 2 or 3 different versions of pop-up ads out there.

I run Spybot and AdAware often; both free, supported almost daily to spare you the pain of spyware.

I don't know about the other browsers beyond IE 6, but I have found a toolbar that works with the program so far that not only prevents pop-up ads, but "locks" your home page down so any spyware can't change it for you.

All I can suggest you to do is to ask, listen and learn and go from there.
