Warner Bros. has bought the film options to Piers Anthony's long-running XANTH fantasy novel series. The TROY writer-director team of David Benioff and Wolfgang Petersen, along with Diana Rathburn of Radiant Productions (which is Petersen's film company) will serve as producers on the film(s).
Besides the initial announcement that appeared today in Variety, no word was given as to what shape the team will take the XANTH movie. Anthony has written 29 different XANTH novels over the years, so the storyline for a XANTH movie could wind up being a mixture of stories from different adventures. The first of Anthony's light-hearted fantasy novels, A SPELL FOR CHAMELEON, was first published in 1977 and was about a young man named Bink who undertook a perilous quest. Since every individual in Xanth had one unique spell that only they alone could cast, and Bink seemed to have no magical power whatsoever, he had to discover what his power is or be banished forever from his village.
